  • Yeah that kinda makes sense, thanks. I'll see how it goes and have this as a potential solution. Bluemels and other bits and bobs ordered so I'll probably give it a go next weekend. Also ordered some 65s for the 26er which should hopefully be straightforward.

  • i think the strael came with everything except the bolts for the eyelets (i guess because they vary between mudguard manufacturer?). the sks mudguards came with tonnes of vary length bolts and washers etc. so fitting wasnt a problem. they are doing a great job! 2 hours in the pissing rain yesterday with my club:

  • Looking great! I've got a Strael 3.0 due early next year, do you reckon 35mm guards is as big as you can go, or is there room for something a little bit bigger? I'm hoping there's enough room for 32c tyres and 40mm guards.

  • Cheers for reply! I may just go for SKS ones then as otherwise I'll be searching for the eyelet bolts!

  • 40mm will be fine. I think the official clearance is 35mm with guards.

  • you can go a bit bigger - i think 40mm would actually be fine. 32c may be a squeeze but probably doable! let us know how you get on :-)

  • yeah they seem good and pretty cheap :-)

  • Sweet, cheers! I shall, need to get my hands on the bike first! Hopefully mid-Jan but won't hold my breath given current state of things.

  • fingers crossed! post in the fairlight thread when it arrives

  • How important are the front mudguard safety clip thingys? My Kinesis mudguards didn't come with any and I've run them for a few years but I've always wondered if I should be using them.

  • They’re unimportant until required.
    Your results may vary.

  • Did you manage to find some 37mm PDWs anywhere? I'm also struggling.

  • Ha good point. I've already lost my front teeth once before so I think I'll order some just in case.

  • nope - hence fitting the sks guards

  • I want to make a rear flap. I've got a thick and flexible A4 sized piece of rubber. What's the best way to secure this to my plastic guards? I'm thinking of dremelling a few slots and using good old zip-ties.

Also, would it be possible to fashion something to give the chainset/BB area more coverage on the driveside? I'm running 1x so don't have to worry about chainline variation.

  • I usually drill a couple of holes and use pop rivets to fix the flap; you just need to make sure the rivet heads are large enough.

Also, would it be possible to fashion something to give the chainset/BB area more coverage on the driveside?

Beyond a scobleflap? I guess you might be able to use milk carton HDPE or something to extend the guard round?

  • I think I used a hole punch and two zip ties, worked a treat and tidy enough.

  • So I've noticed recently that the front mudguard on my commuter isn't particularly effective at keeping my feet dry. The guard is some kind of cheap stronglight model, ~40mm wide, over some 32mm Gravelkings with a decent length flap. The issue isn't so much direct spray from the wheel coming under the flap, or the spray coming up past the guards, but water seems to deflect off the inside of the guard and splash laterally towards my feet.

Is this an issue with the tyre being too wide for the mudguard? or it being fitting too far/too close to the tyre?

  • Probably because plastic guards don't have that little lip that metal ones do so water has a free run to the edge. You might be able to improvise something to catch the water at the edge and keep it in the guard, or just get some GBs.

  • Or just get the proper size, usually 10-12mm wider than tire.

  • Quick question - Do I need specific guards for 650b wheels? I'm running 650b with 1.95" gravelkings, although they actually measure 52mm on my hunt rims.. Would the overall circumference be the same as 700c? I would also prob need 55-60mm wide guards to ensure coverage..

  • The SKS in 65mm will work, but GB has a dedicated 650b x 60mm that'll fit better.

  • Cheers, is GB - Gilles Berthoud? The sheer amount of water 52mm Gravelking SK's spray up is ridiculous.

  • Pdw road plus back in stock at condor…

  • I improvised a mudflap, only tried it with a few shallow puddles but seems to be working.
