  • Not much by way of tinkering. Some tlc/ looking at the fit on my girlfriend's bike which was a bargain pickup from the bike project 1-2 years ago

  • Picked up a cool 60s Mercian Vincitore in my size recently but I'm moving into a flat so need space and cash. That might have to go

  • Have picked up a GT recently (again space might mean this needs moving on before I can fiddle with it), discovered a lovely Overbury round the corner and got some 105 cranks for my genesis. New outer ring in the post.

  • Currently trying out running 3 bikes which will be max constraint when I move into a flat with stairs. My riding is mainly road at the moment and a weekly (ish) gravel ride plus daily (ish) commuting/town.

Genesis - not liking the big bars but enjoying the bike. Narrower non flared bars, maybe a front rack, longer mudguards and this will be even more sorted for winter/commuting/touring/town. Get quite paranoid locking this up for more than an hour.

Stanton - all fine. Not doing much mtbing but it goes on the gravel rides. Genesis could do them but weighed down with the racks and it is a bit rattly.

Rourke, fits okay, relatively cheap way to road bike. Managed to break the left hand shifter (if anyone has a 2x shimano sti shifter for sale please let me know).

Don't really need to do anything other than tweak the genesis and replace the Rourke's shifter. Having said that..

    1) have almost daily debates if I can get everything into 1 bike (Singular Peregrine or something) that can have racks on and off as & when.
    2) bike to work purchase of the Fairlight Strael 3.0 or equivalent modern steel disc road bike is getting increasingly tempting

  • Genesis got some flaps for winter and picked up a front rack off of here.

Picked up a lovely 2000 CAAD 5 R700 off here. 9 speed. Good condition. This will get cleaned up (chain, cables, pads) and ridden and if it fits more comfortably than the Rourke that could be up for grabs.

Unfortunately not got the funds to do this kind of thing

  • Trying to just service and clean up the cannondale, ride it pretty much as is to see how it is size wise.
53-39 chainset with a 128 BCD (~7.5cm between adjacent holes) and an 11-25 (guess) is tough.

  • Cassette doesn't actually look too bad and a narrow range replacement isn't cheap. Cheapest replacement is an 11-32. Anyone know if that'll work with this 9 speed 105 mech? Looks short cage to my untrained eye.

Chainrings - replacements hard to find. Think I will see if I can get a cheap 34-50 chainset fitted for now.

Don't think replacing the chain is worthwhile with that inner ring being so sharp.

Gathering bar tape, brake pads, cables etc

    Bars are 26mm diameter

  • I’m fairly certain those chainrings are 130bcd, so easy to get replacements.

If you can find something with a 12tmax that should be enough, but not sure if mech will stretch to 32t max

  • Ah I think you're right. I think a 39t inner replacement is easy but looks hard to find a 34-50 pair.

Will see if I can get a 11 or 12-28 cassette

  • You won't be able to find 130bcd chainrings in 34t, that's too small for that size. Compact chainset standard is 34/50 but using 110bcd

  • Think I'll get a replacement 39 whilst I'm trying it out for size

Had a closer look today and I think I need a new rim

  • Cleaning, removed old chain & serviced headset

New 130bcd 39t chainring and maybe some lever hoods to order

New wheels courtesy of @joeae which may need a service

Annoying things: one of the cassette spacers was brittle and snapped, ordered the wrong size jockey wheels and lost the pusher bit of my crank arm tool

  • Put a deposit down on a Peregrine and starting to think about the build with the bike shop supplying it.

700c Wheelset (tbc - likely Son front, hope rear, good rims for 35-48c ish tyres)
Dynamo light (sinewave beacon or something)
    Hope H/S
    Klampers - I think.
    1x 11 mtb gearing
    TRP brake levers
    bar end shifter

Don't really want to pay full retail on all parts as it'll get expensive. Hoping to get cranks, seatpost, bars, stem second hand and maybe the mech to save some £££.

Any ideas on a crankset so look out for in the classifieds/ebay?

Will ask in the dynamo thread on lights.

Anything I should change on the wheels/rim recommendations that'll be sound over the odd rock garden?

Klampers - worth the money? Easier maintenance than hydraulic brakes but still very good is what I have heard...

    Some build inspo!

Those Paul Klamper brakes look great and the serviceability appears to be excellent for a home mechanic. The polished alloy version is nicest to my eyes, as it seems to minimize the boxy aesthetic, though the black and orange version is very nice. While I have no intention of exploring hydraulic disk brakes, I will definitely take a closer look at these cable-operated ones.

  • Oh, exciting! I wanted a Peregrine for a long time and I love both of Toms builds up there. I ended up altering an old Raleigh frame but going for a similar vibe.
Regarding cranks, I assume you want to go for a classic look. Top of my list would be White Industries Eno. They pop up on eBay sometimes and look great 1x.
Tom used a Velo Orange Grand Cru SS crank which comes in black and silver with a 110bcd. So loads of chainring choices. I think on the Peregrine MK2 he is using a Rene Herse crank but the Velo Orange Grand Cru 50.4 or SunXCD 50.4 are very similar and they can all be run 1x, 2x 3x. Also popular with this kind of build are Middleburn cranks. They have a replaceable spider to accommodate most chainring sizes and combinations and even the newest model has a very classy look.

  • Klampers - worth the money?

You're paying for US manufacture and John Watson's retainer.

  • A mate has klampers on a couple of bikes. He reckons they’re about as good as Spyres, but with more Instagram points

  • Heard good things about Juin Tech brakes too

  • I'm keeping my eye on ebay for 175mm cranks that may do. Cheers for that info

Also leaning towards a full grx groupset but not sure if 1x or 2x is best for my uses or if they'll particularly suit it

  • FyI you can get a 38t inner chainring for 130bcd cranks, from TA specialities.

  • +1 for Juin Tech. Got some and love them. However, I feel like Klampers would suit this frame way better.

A similar concern about the GRX group. It's very functional but looks too modern? Unfortunately, new derrailleuers all look a bit spaceshipey in my opinion so there isn't much to do here but a different crankset and maybe even shifters would suit this better.
Just my two cents though. Do what feels right to you.

  • yeah cheers for this, I do agree. Polished silver would be great.
I do like normal road style brake lever/shifters rather than bar end shifters, but not sure if they'd work with a mtb rear mech..

Think the bike shop may also struggle to get a GRX groupset

  • I think one of the GRX mechs can work with an 11-46 cassette when used 1x. Not sure which one of them exactly. That can already give you a very big range.

If you want more or need to use a mtb derailleur with road STIs you might have to go either for electronic shifting or adapter solutions like a wolftooth tanpan, a ratio kit (sram only) or a shiftmate (8?).

You can obviously achieve a similar gear range with 2x with fewer special components. On my 650b "rando" bike I use a sub-compact chainset 46-30 with an 11-34 cassette. 2x9. Very simple but a wide range to be fast on the road or able to an off-road climb with luggage. I think GRX 2x offers a very similar range.

  • Cannondale finished off by my LBS who is ace.
Thanks again @joeae for the wheels (1/2)

Anyone got a seat for sale??
