Powder Coating in and around brighton

Posted on
  • Hi chaps,

I've been looking in to powder coating a frame locally and thought I'd share what I found. Smith Coating in Hove will coat a frame for £30 (their minimum charge) but can't strip it. The guy there gave me a number of someone (429867) who will strip it for £15 to £20. So that's £45 to £50 all said and done which seems reasonable to me. Does anyone know anywhere that can do it cheaper in the area?

  • i think elvis had his done cheap in newhaven. think they stripped it too.

  • That's a good price. Only problem is getting it from stripper/blaster to painter in time. Its got to be quick so frame is still suitable for coating.

I used the guy in Newhaven by the port train station. Top bloke. Any colour you want as long as its black or maybe silver.

  • Well it sounds like they work together all the time so I guess they would transport the frame with whatever else they were doing that day. The stripping guy said he had six bikes in that day, I assume some of those were destined for Smith Coating.

How much did you pay at the place in Newhaven out of interest?

  • elvis is the man to ask about cheap strippers... ;-)

  • I've used Smith Coating and they were happy to transport the frame from the stripper (I think he was called Tom) I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Very good prices, you come to my club, yes!

Newhaven cost under £50 as he just sticks it in with a load of motorbike bits.

I'd go with the Hove guys as you'll get a choice of colour. I know one of the local shops uses them and the finishes I've seen look good.

  • Ok, thanks guys, looks like I'll go with Smith Coating. I wanted matt black but now think maybe I should go for something more interesting. Can't afford it for a few weeks so I'll have a think about it!

  • Reviving an old thread here, but does anyone know of any decent powder coaters in or around the Brighton area? From checking tinterweb it seems that Smiths Coating no longer operate, so any other suggestions?

  • Big dredge. Anyone got recent recommendations for powder coaters? Other option I found through UTFS-ing was getting paint done by Chickens Frame Emporium

  • John at chickens is good, he really takes pride in what he does and small local business etc. did a really good job on something for me once and only heard good things.

if you want a wild card, theres a guy who works (maybe did work...) in Subway on London road, I think his name was Kieran, he is a keen amateur sprayer and wouldn't charge much. what I saw of his work was really good. he might still do this if you fancy trying.

Keep powder coating in Uckfield are well worth avoiding, they did a very shoddy powder coat job for me a few years back.

and avoid like the plague, bodyworks in Saltdean on Longridge ave, he sprayed my vespa and did the worst job imaginable plus the guy is not good to deal with, takes no responsibility for his work. lazy and shoddy workmanship.

  • Cheers, think I'll go with Chickens then unless I can track the Subway sprayer down!

  • +1 for jon chickens if he's busy he can be hard to get hold of via email requiring a bit of a nudge. He's only done a couple of bits for me but I've seen a few of his frames up close and everything he does looks really flawless. He's a good guy as well.

  • Cool, will definitely give him a go then.

  • Reviving this thread to see if anyone has any recommendations around Brighton? Want to get my partners tired flaking frame sorted out this summer.

  • Unanimously Jon Chickens. This was just being discussed on the Brighton sale and swap thread.
