I'm afraid I've not travelled since Covid, so I don't know how practical this is, but I'd try to get the train to as close to your destination as possible, then pick up a hire car - just less hassle, and you can read a book/sleep/whatever. Then it's a short(er) drive to where you're staying, shorter hire period, less risk of pranging it etc.
