Can anyone recommend any remote desktop software? I've been using windows remote desktop via a VPN connection but it intermittently freezes and I have to restart. The company also uses Hamachi client but I find it horrible.

Vnc

Remote desktop with port forwarding rather than a VPN?
I've used Duo to add 2FA for a bit of extra security.

Out of curiosity, what do people use remote desktop for now days? Sysadmin stuff?

Good call I'll try VNC and see if it's more stable.

Just working from home on personal device. Surely a very common scenario these days. Virtual desktop in my case.

Where's a good reliable place to buy RAM at the moment. Scan?
-
• #7710
See my previous post about buying from Scan. They gave me brand new ram, straight away, after mine broke after 2+ years of use

Thanks :). Slopes of to check the motherboard info..

So it seems TightVNC displays both of my server screens on one of the client screens. Is it possible to do multiple monitors with VNC? To complicate matters I have different sizes/resolutions at work and home.
Edit, that might be moot as there's a definite lag, more so than with WRD, so it's probably a non-starter.

Beware having grilles this close to fan intakes; this will produce a lot of turbulence and noise.
Do these cages have mounts at the rear? If so, you’ll need to seal all gaps between the grille and fan intake to prevent recirculation currents.

I'm going to cut the grill out just leaving the edge and then put a magnetic dust filter over the top - Currently intake is 2x120mm like this atm, and, exit is 3x140s with grills and dust filyers; they're barely audible unless under heavy load.

I'm looking to buy a Surface Dock mk 1, anyone have one they're not using that they want to shift?

I was intending to buy new PC components from Scan but stuff I'm looking for doesn't seem to be in stock there anymore. Is buying from Amazon (with most of it being either Amazon EU or third party suppliers) going to be a pain if things don't work? Or anyone used Box or AWD-IT?
Trying to find somewhere with a 5600G in stock.

Box were great for me - saw some iffy reviews but after Amazon lost a PSU, Box provided the same one next day at a better price.
AWD-IT had good comms/customer service for my motherboard.

Cheers, good to hear that they are both decent.

Mrs sacreds laptop needs replacing. I have no idea what I'm doing. She uses it for working from home, writing reports, web browsing etc no gaming or anything too taxing. She is currently using a Dell we bought 8 years ago for £350.
Is this any good? I was previously recommended the Dell outlet on here.

This will be woefully slow with 4GB RAM and the dual-core Celeron; will struggle with heavier websites and video calling.
8GB and quad-core Pentium/Celeron a minimum these days.

Probably not the best person to answer, but also the hard drive / SSD is only 128GB. I know someone who had a Windows pc with 128GB and it was tight as the OS ended up taking up a lot of space regardless of what they say the minimum requirements are.
For a bit more this is more the sort of thing you want.

Gotcha thanks.
Is this one going to be noticeably better?
-
• #7723
I'd agree with the above. That one that Hugo7 linked is much better for just a bit more. I wouldn't get one with the specs that you linked.
-
• #7724
Out of interest what the laptp she's using atm?
If you're budget minded an SSD, maxing out the RAM and a clean windows install can go a long way. -
• #7725
That one is going to be better but it's only really the processor that's an improvement.
Personally I'd go with the i3 one, I don't think the specs increase its enough to justify the large price increase.
I went onto Windows 11 when it came out, running a fairly high end PC, and have had zero issues so far, but also pretty much zero benefit as well…
