Easy tiger! Hates a strong word, a mild dislike is probably more accurate.
Sarcasm aside, I honestly don't think they're that much better than well set up calipers with good cables and pads. I had Spyres ages ago, on a couple of frames, and I realise tech has moved on, but they weren't that impressive. But most importantly, they look shit, especially on a frame with external cable routing. Oh, I'm also a bit of a luddite/retrogrouch.
Undecided on the braking front, I'll have to wait til my wheels are built and tyres fitted, then see what kind of room calipers leave me with, but I think you're probably right, 48s+guards under a caliper may be asking too much.
Won't be TRP (not enough drop for 48s), so either Pauls or Tektro R559, but I haven't completely ruled out cantis yet.
Only thing for certain, definitely not disc brakes!
