Mrs RVL has a problem with an old (2009 Unibody) Macbook - I try to avoid computer fiddling where possible so I'm pretty ignorant and wondered if anyone here had any bright ideas before the venerable machine is retired...
When you turn it on, it gets this far and then shuts down

I also managed to get as far as this screen at one stage

and after that it went to the login screen but because the keyboard wasn't apparently connected it didn't allow me to log on as her and I could go into guest mode and see the mountain wallpaper but after that I power cycled and it went back to the previous mode of dropping out during the opening screen.
At one stage I got a white screen too with some fairly vigorous fan action.
most of my fiddling was doing various combinations of power cycle and command/option/whatever key presses I could find on the internet - with and without the battery connected -

Is anyone able to advise a reasonable ballpark price to pay for a 2019 MacBook Pro in good used condition

I paid £1.8k for a refurbished i7 with a 512gb ssd, at the beginning of the year, so £2.2k maybe more.

@Rik_Van_Looy
You might want to try some of the steps mentioned in this article : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mac-wont-boot-step-step-guide-waking/amp/You could also try booting in verbose mode to get some more info on what's happening, then Google what it says. Hold down command and v after power on.
From the screenshot you posted, which looks like it's from a verbose boot, there is a process using up a lot of the cpu and it's a network communication thing, or so it seems from this:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.howtogeek.com/364017/what-is-rpcsvchost-and-why-it-running-on-my-mac/amp/
Which could be something to pursue. -

I have the 11” iPad Pro and it’s great. I got sick of clients saying they don’t need photos straight away, then on the night asking for a few for social. Pain to be hauling a laptop for that, but I don’t want to edit on my phone unless I have to.
Half the weight but more powerful. These M1 chips are impressive. I have the Mac Mini too and the intel laptop def is the odd one out.

Splendid, thanks for the pointers, will investigate further.....

I’m going for a new iPad Pro to replace my 2015 mbp (works fine but buyers gonna buy) - seems basically as powerful too

I raised this a year ago, then did nothing about it, but I need to now...
Recommendations for a reasonably priced external drive for my itunes library to free up space on my Macbook Air?

Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced 20-24" high dpi monitor? Need a second one but my google is weak

How high?
There’s a couple of Dell Ultrasharps in the sale thread. 1920x1200

Ideally I'd like to match my LG 5K but that seems easier said than done
Lg 5k = 217 ppi
Dell U2415 = 94 ppiSome more googling and it seems like an old iMac 21.5" in target display mode could work. Seems like a strange workaround. It won't work if I upgrade my MacOS beyond Catalina or get a newer mini...

I have an LG 4k 24UD58 that does the job.
-
• #18695
Thanks. That seems quite high? I’m asking on behalf of a family member who is selling. They said they bought it for 2.4K new.
-
• #18696
looking through sold listings on ebay, there's a big discrepancy in what they go for, so anywhere between £900 and £2.4k depending on spec.
Depending on wear, how well kept its been, and where you want to sell it, you could offer it up for £1.7k-£1.9k and see what happens. Depends on how it matches up with the cost of getting an equivalent model now.
-
• #18697
Interesting! looks like it could do the job. Not the prettiest of screens but doesn't cost £1k+ either...
-
• #18698
Ok appreciate the advice. Yeah I had a browse through ebay and the prices seem to be all over the place. If anyone reading is in the market and wants to make an offer please feel free to DM.
Not sure where they’ll end up listing it but I’m sure they’d like to avoid ebay if possible.

Anyone have any ideas about how I can solve the issue below
I'm trying to view some super old scripts I wrote on final draft back in 97. I've tried to open them in final draft 9 and 11, and both don't recognize the file or the format, when I view them now, they are displayed as exec or Unix executable files.
Probably something to do with the movement of macs from some processor to another which now means I can't view old files. I've managed to get back the old word documents, but the final draft scripts are currently unreadeable.
Anyone have any ideas about how I can make them readable again?
Let me know -
• #18700
It's an FDR file I presume rather than FDX? Do you know which version of FD you used to write them? I've always found Final Draft very helpful and responsive to tech issues so I'd suggest asking them directly.
Though that they're showing as that executables makes me think maybe some kind of corruption?
The Pro and Max are specced for active cooling. I think the standard M1 (and its successors) are the most they can put in an iPad.
I mean, they could do it as a stunt, but the power/cooling issues would make it pointless.
