and after that it went to the login screen but because the keyboard wasn't apparently connected it didn't allow me to log on as her and I could go into guest mode and see the mountain wallpaper but after that I power cycled and it went back to the previous mode of dropping out during the opening screen.
At one stage I got a white screen too with some fairly vigorous fan action.
most of my fiddling was doing various combinations of power cycle and command/option/whatever key presses I could find on the internet - with and without the battery connected
