Having a play about with bike design (the old fashioned/luddite way).
If I've done my sums right, which I'm pretty sure I have, with a 65mm bb drop the bb height is quite high.
If anybody reading this has a set of 650b wheels fitted with 48mm tyres would you mind measuring the diameter for me (and letting me know).

Ultradynamico cavas (47.99!) on pacenti brevet rims look to me to be about 685mm diameter.
Old school bikeCAD looks wayyy more satisfying :)

You going guards and 48s?
-
• #933
There's a useful table at http://www.bikecalc.com/wheel_size_math in case you're not already familiar!
-
• #934
@crow, cheers, that's what I used as a base figure, found one site saying 680mm another 688mm, so went somewhere middleish.
Old school BikeCad is way more enjoyable than using my shit old laptop.
@atk, gonna have eyelets fitted, but think 48mm will be without. I'll leave the mudguards on Winston 1, then maybe run this without. Not spoken to Winston yet, he's mulling over my original email and gonna get back to me, so chainstays may go a smidge longer and fork rake / head angle altered accordingly to accommodate 48 and guards if I decide to go that way.
@Cupcakes, ooh that's a useful resource, ta. -

Will do, tyres are 47s really but on Brevet rims (fairly narrow), at least you’ll maybe get sonething near an absolute minimum height for what you’re planning.

That would be great, I'm looking at Pacenti Brevet rims for the build.

For what it's worth, https://www.bikegeocalc.com/ is really easy to work with.
-
• #938
That is far simpler than BikeCad. Thanks for sharing that, very useful.
-
• #939
I should clarify, my post makes it sound like I just looked it up, but I did actually go out to the shed to measure! Always a slightly inexact science when they are on the bike but somewhere in the range of 685-690.

Cool, appreciate that, I think I got bumfuzzled at the bb height because the geo I was looking at (using as a template) was for 42mm not 48mm tyres, so my numbers are right, and having measured bb height on Winston 1 they are very similar, so it won't be a problem.

Well, Winston had better say he wants to build another frame for me as my choice of rims came back into stock, and were promptly ordered.
And so it begins...... -
• #942
I was only asking because 48s+guards+caliper brakes seems like a stretch, but then I haven't actually tried it. Guess you could keep them short with 48s and just drop down to a 42 if you wanted guards in the end.
Going TRP again or are the racers appearing on this?
-
• #943
Undecided on the braking front, I'll have to wait til my wheels are built and tyres fitted, then see what kind of room calipers leave me with, but I think you're probably right, 48s+guards under a caliper may be asking too much.
Won't be TRP (not enough drop for 48s), so either Pauls or Tektro R559, but I haven't completely ruled out cantis yet.
Only thing for certain, definitely not disc brakes! -
• #944
probably mentioned further up the thread but why the hatred for disc brakes?
-
• #945
Easy tiger! Hates a strong word, a mild dislike is probably more accurate.
Sarcasm aside, I honestly don't think they're that much better than well set up calipers with good cables and pads. I had Spyres ages ago, on a couple of frames, and I realise tech has moved on, but they weren't that impressive. But most importantly, they look shit, especially on a frame with external cable routing. Oh, I'm also a bit of a luddite/retrogrouch. -

I had Spyres
Spyres aren't that much better than well set up calipers.
Modern road hydro are another league. -
• #947
Modern hydro sucks cause you're stuck with expensive shit groupsets and idiotic wheel standards
-
• #948
Disc brakes pretty much killed cycling
-
• #949
Yeah I know, please refer to the last sentence of my previous post. Considered halfway house of cable/hydro (Juintech?), but that's as far as it went.

Comrade!
Oh, to add to all that, I'm an indecisive idiot with nowt else to spend my money on!
