  • thanks - yes, I'm worried about the local ambient temperature being too high for a normal cable's sheath. I'll try find a suitable PTFE cable - unless you can recommend one?

  • Just taken a pop on a Chromecast audio from here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Google-Chromecast-Audio-2nd-Generation-Media-Streamer-Black-/124979679421?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

Seems suspiciously cheap given the demand for them but they do occasionally pop up s/h in quantities...

  • I'll try find a suitable PTFE cable

Can be hard to find in large enough sizes for speaker wire. If you can find a cooking thermometer, take a measurement of the actual temperature in the location you're going to run cable, you might get away with 180°C silicone rubber which is easier to find in suitable cable forms as it's used more in automotive whereas PTFE is mostly used for small internal equipment wiring. If you're a tart about the actual wire form, you can roll your own by pulling bare conductors into PTFE or silicone rubber sleeves, which are easily available in a wide range of sizes. https://www.hilltop-products.co.uk/ are #tester_approved for such things.

  • If I’m considering a Cambridge Audio AXA35, what other integrated amps should I take a look at?

  • My vintage Thorens tt is starting to play up and sounds shit despite a brand new cartridge a few weeks ago.
Any good places that could service it and ideally upgrade the wiring for me?

Alternatively I'm looking at buying a brand new one for Xmas but will resist splashing the cash if I can avoid it.

  • NAD 316bee, rega io.... I dunno, at that level there are a lot of choices. What's the criteria, max budget?

  • Cheers. Max is £400. It’s for a small room and will be used with one set of bookshelf speakers (currently some Gale ones that I’m going to upgrade later).

Will primarily be used with an analogue DJ mixer, secondary use will be CD separate and PC. I like clarity and detail over bass.

  • it's all seeming a bit complicated - I think I might just bore two holes in the cupboards either side of the fireplace, and drop the normal cable into the underbuilding then thread it back the other side...

  • I've not had anything serviced by Audio Gold, but have brought old stuff that they've repaired and have been very happy.

  • Wow - why are they so sought after? I think I have one in a drawer somewhere, maybe an ebay listing is pending!

  • Anyone in the market for a Pro-ject phono box before I list on ebay?

Rather it went with less hassle than ebay offers.

one of these in black https://www.project-audio.com/en/product/phono-box/

  • Yeah possibly, mine died the other day. Although I'm wondering whether just to get a new turntable with an integrated phone stage.

  • Cool cool, lemme know can drop off in person if London based

  • Yes to that! The very late 70s early 80s Sony before they went to the mad electronically suspended tone arm (insert mad 80s sounding name) were beautiful, and really solid feeling. And that dark metallic brown grey vibe going on.
Doesn't the 6750 have a football type mat on it? One of them has like an "air suspension" matt
If you find any more 6xxx or 8xxx let me know, can sit next to my 70s technics.

  • Thanks. Will give them a call this week. Wrong side of town, but I'm not sure that old man in South Croydon is still active.

  • They were far too useful so they stopped making them 😅 left a bit of a hole in the market for a cheap way of linking your old but gold hifi equipment with the modern world... really handy if you have other audio things working in sync via Google home & want the old hifi in on the action. Of course you can take the audio from a Chromecast enabled TV & put that through an older hifi system but that's not always do-able

  • Are they free issue with a £1.5m "live work space"?

Not sure they are positioned for optimal stereo imaging though :)

  • The 6750 has a fluid filled mat. problem is, they go a bit stiff over the 40 years and get a bit lumpy. amazing tt though. this is my second one.

  • if anyone wants a nice pair of tannoy eatons - drop me a pm.

  • May be worth calling billy vee, who serviced my rega, although i'm not sure they work on thorens.

  • Keeping it as simple as possible, I've got the Radford back where it belongs - poking lovely things up the Cheviots.

I wish I thought of putting it on top of the record shelves earlier.
