  • Great shots of a beautiful place.
    Phone pics?

  • iPhone 12 Mini! I have some film I need to have developed, too.

  • Man that’s amazing, no doubt down to the photographer’s skill as well.

  • There's actually trees in Dartmoor?

  • Some. Also affects tarps. Admittedy, they are probably aimed at protecting the ancient woods. But camping is already prohibited in all the locations you might be able to hammock/tarp.
Also reducing the permitted wild camping areas.

  • I don't really take much notice of this stuff - my version of wild camping is normally super discreet and LNT (and illegal). It's the muppets that rock up in a van, light a fire and leave a bunch of glass and cans and shite around that ruin camping spots.

Not everything illegal is wrong, not everything legal is right.

  • If a hippy shits in an ancient wood and no one is there to observe him, does he really shit?

  • If your only calories are from beer, you can go for a very long time before you actually need a shit. #hippyscampingtips

  • Incidentally, I have never shat out side on the ground.

Don't know about any of the dynamics of the particular activity. I am in for a rude awakening I reckon.

  • I have never shat out side on the ground.

    Weirdo.

How do you show your displeasure at your annoying neighbours? Or particular driver's automobiles? What do you fling at Brexit voters and Tories? What do you use instead of anti-theft paste?

  • Has anyone ever killed a tree with a hammock?

Things like this seem bonkers to me- ancient woodland or not. Of all the threats to ancient woodland in this country, the tiny number of people spending the odd night in a hammock should not appear high on the list. I don't even think ancient woodlands are that "fragile" - there is a reason they are ancient! You've just got to not massively fuck with them / chop them down*.

*I Am Not An Expert In Ancient Woodland.

  • Has anyone ever killed a tree with a hammock?

No idea. I've never even seen a hammock in use, but what about 100 people (or whatever peak season brings) over the course of 3months of summer? It does sound a bit like the 'police confiscating electric scooters while we have cars killing '000s of people per year' thing.

  • I don't even think ancient woodlands are that "fragile"

I'm guessing it is not necessarily just about the trees but the rare lichens etc that are within the ecosystem that hammock straps & footfall could damage.

  • That's a decent shout. But still - how useful is ancient woodland so delicate no one can go in?

Still can't see hammock camping becoming those lichens most pressing challenge given the rate the climate seems to changing.

I've not been to Dartmoor in a while, but I've been struck by how significantly less boggy the Black Mountains in Wales have been on my last couple of trips.

So, the lichen will die and less people will have seen them before they do would be my prediction. Happy Friday.

  • how useful is ancient woodland so delicate no one can go in?

    In terms of biodiversity, very.

Still can't see hammock camping becoming those lichens most pressing challenge given the rate the climate seems to changing.

Undoubtedly. Not necessarily a good reason reason to accelerate the destruction of the few rare & ancient ecosystems though.

  • We don't have Brexit voters and Tories up here.

    FINE. I'll go practice.

  • Replace with "English people" along with "people buying Loch Ness merch"

  • Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

  • I was going to say Americans claiming some sort of Scottish heritage but that hit too close to home (there is shit in Scotland named after my G G G Grandfather though).

  • Just work on that accent... they'll never know.

  • I'm born and raised in Fife.

I know what you're thinking... I should have shat outside by now.

  • Ah, well, nothing to worry about then.

This is what we used to help communicate when we were up there...

  • Covers the broad strokes of the lexical challenges we face.

Anyway....I recommend the Big Agnes Copper Spur.
