  • Recently I started thinking that my stable had too much overlap and I needed a proper road bike to replace my Trek cross bike. A few weeks of scouring fleabay and this 2016 Evo hi-mod popped up for a very reasonable price.

    As with most of my builds I want to try and get it as light as possible without getting too far into the realm of impracticality. I've already managed to source set of older (lighter) Red cranks and some Red callipers and I'll be swapping the rest of Force groupset over from the Trek as this will be a 1x set-up.

    The plan for now is to build it up with stuff I have lying around until I can get a fit Im happy with, then the gram shedding can begin! All being well I'm hoping to eventually get it stripped back to bare carbon and clear coated.

    So far the only issue is that the previous owner was running the bike uber slammed with an ultra low stack stem so I'm stuck using that for now unless anyone wants to sell me an Enve fork for a good price?

    my friend just finished his hillclimb himod in size 54, aka money pit, currently weighing 5.2kg now

  • Ideally I need tapered ones anyway so probably good that you beat me to them.
    This ones a 54 too, if my wheelset comes in at the claimed weight then I should hopefully be on track for a sub 5.5kg build

  • 5.5 fully built would be an achievement already. With that finishing kit, you would need 900 grams wheels ?

  • Oh yeah definitely not with that finishing kit but that will all be going once I've figured out stem length and general fit. The seatpost alone weighs over 250g!!!

    It's cut, but maybe a bit longer than the Dale one? You'd need to strip that also....

  • Here’s the Trek in its current all-road incarnation. Really great bike but I already have the Curve so this is kind of redundant now. Frameset will be up for sale as soon as the Dale is rolling if anyone is interested

  • Just measured again and unfortunately 18cm would barely be any improvement over the current forks. How much were you wanting for them?

  • Sanding it back to raw carbon is a bad idea. Especially on a hi mod frame. The lay up is extremely thin in places on Hi mod SS frames, and there is absolutely no way of removing the paint with running the risk of also removing critical layers of the carbon layup…. (No matter how talented the painter may claim to be).

    A lot of painters that post these before and after paint removal weight claims seem to oblivious to the fact that half the claimed weight loss is actually carbon that’s been sanded away, as well as paint.

    It winds me up seeing all the professional painters out there that are more than happy to do bare carbon finishes without making their customers fully aware that there is a not inconsiderable risk of frame failure involved.

    It might be fine, it might fail catastrophically, but there is absolutely no way of knowing which you’ll get unless you have x-ray eyes.
    Beware.
