I've got a load of these, thought about making some mini machetes or cleavers. I'm not sure what they're made of though, is there any way to tell? I presume they were hardened originally

Run a metal file across them, if it skids they are hardened.

My bad, I know that test. Thinking more if they'll hold an edge
-
• #4181
What were they originally?
-

Plough at a guess.

Blades for a tractor slitter. Did the file test, definitely hardened

You could make some amazing kitchen knives like those ridiculous macho YouTube outdoor chefs use, they all use them...

I’ll buy a blade on its own if you have one spare

I can send you one in a couple weeks, just cover the postage. Send me a pm

Any recommendations for a complete set for the kitchen?

Depending on budget, I don't think you can go wrong with Victorinox with fibrox hanldes, nothing fancy, but really good value for money and hold an edge well.

Something like this is going to be rock solid, great quality and cover most bases:

Or this one with bread knife, sandwich knife, decent kitchen scissors and steel and block:

Not a big fan of knife blocks, but you get a lot of quality for the money.
Not very glamorous though.

Any recommendations on wooden magnetic knife racks? I want it fairly long at 60cm or so.
Been looking at this one:
Not sure I want to be spending £144 on it though!

Or the Henckels Four Star

Same price point, but a much nicer handle.
Henckels / Zwilling Twin Point are Victorinox Fibrox price point, and have (again, personal preference) a better balance.

I've had that ^^^ Henckels 3-knife set for 15 years or so, and the knives are still going strong. FWIW I prefer the Professional S handles to the 4-Star ones, so it's probably worth comparing them in a shop to see which you prefer.

I’d agree with that, definitely prefer 4 star.
I’ve got Heckels 4 star that my mum gave me that’s still going strong.
24cm chef knife is a bit of a beast.Twin point isn’t full tang I don’t think, and the handles aren’t as meaty as the 4 star, 5 star or professional S.

I think the 4 star chefs knife I have is older than I am, but it’s still 100% dependable.
To be fair it’s got about as much steel as a meat cleaver, and I’ve not taken to it as much as my Chinese cleaver and Victorinox Chinese cleaver, but have used it myself for 18 years and no major issues.

Simple enough to make, I would have thought. Nice piece of wood, plenty neodymium magnets, pillar drill.
Edited to add: I’m looking for a little project right now. I have some nice cherry wood, also oak. if you give me an idea of dimensions and how many knives you want to hang I’ll make one for you at cost.
-
• #4197
That’s a very kind offer, I think I’ll take you up on that!

Simple enough to make, I would have thought.
I've got a couple of walnut offcuts that I'm planning on doing this with.
I bought a keyhole router bit too, to make it easier to hang.

The wall fixing is probably the trickiest part. Has to be secure. Thinking of using flush mount brackets.

Would a cleat mount work, do you reckon?
Certainly less faffy than routing precise holes.
