• Has anyone got tips for making night driving less unpleasant?

I don’t think I’d driven in the dark since before covid until last night and had forgotten how dazzling modern headlights are - and I’m convinced that street lighting is dimmer and it exacerbates it.

Driving on the A12 it was just generally very hard to gauge distance of cars behind in either lanes, both in wing and rearview mirrors. Flicking the switch on the rearview just made it feel like the mirror wasn’t there and was even more difficult.

Wearing contacts means that by the evening my eyes are pretty dry anyway, so having a fixed gaze driving makes that worse too. But driving at night with glasses is shitty because of the glare.

Are those night driving glasses they sell at petrol stations good for anything? Or just the ultimate Alan Partridge accessory?

I’m 40 soon and this really makes me feel it.

  • Same age(ish), same problem.

I find that driving in an old pair of glasses with a mild prescription makes the world of difference at night.

Maybe it's time for an eye test?
