  • Do people really pop 8-10 (or more) SIS gels during a marathon? Have been watching some fuelling videos and there are recommendations to take a couple of gels every 40 mins, along with 500ml of 50/50 isotonic sports drink/water each hour.

  • I don’t think that necessary - but really you need to go with what works for you.

My marathon routine is Maurten 320 1hr-30mins before, one at around half way and then probably a gel or two (one caffeine) if I’m flagging

  • I think Maurten has different strategies for different pace runners can’t recall how different they are but I do wonder whether the nutrition requirements are different for a 2 hour runner and a 4 hour runner…

My one decent marathon I had 1 bottle of murten 320 and 5 gels which is a lot, but then my fastest km was the last one… so certainly didn’t hurt too much!

Not sure what’s going on with my running, after 6 weeks of steady build up to 60k per week had an easier week and then had a crack at a 5k set off hoping for around 19:30, but by 500m my heart rate was already 180 and ended up with 21:33… can only assume that the sniffle and sore throat I’ve had for a couple of days is having more of an effect on me but really hurts motivation to get out and go again this week!
