Which Tyres?

  • Vittoria Corsa Control. I'm just about to start my second winter on a pair, and the gumwall's are still in decent condition. They are also a tough and relatively fast tyre, ideal for faster rides.

  • I have Cinturato M's on my bike at the mo, in the 40mm variety. Roll nicely in the dry, but not super grippy in the wet/slop. I preferred the Vittoria Terreno Wet's that I had on before tbh. Not used the G One Ultrabite

  • I need a 29x2.35 for daily commute + odd weekend gravel and/or light Epping type trails. Currently have one bike and wheelset so needs to work for a bit of everything.

Schwalbe G-One Speed (Super Ground E-25ADDIX SpeedGrip 560g)
    or
Vittoria Mezcal (Tubeless TNT Graphene 2.0 700-735g)

Anyone have experience with either or a good alternative?

  • Not sure I'd want to commute on Mezcals

  • Yeah I did wonder.

However, everyone seems to harp on about how fast they roll on tarmac and mixed terrain. Do they actually mean ‘for an XC tyre they’re surprisingly fast on the road for 10% of my riding, but that’s relative to my usual chonky mtb tyre and really they’re still sluggish’?

I like the idea of a fast & supple tyre that has some tread for adventures on the weekend. Should I be looking at something else?

  • I've only used them in 2.6" which is probably a factor. How about a Specialized Fast Trak? Also in 2.3 but not the superlight S-works version.

    Or Conti Race King

  • I don’t suppose anyone knows if any of the manufacturers for bike tyres make them in the UK? I know that some of them make car tyres in the UK but wondering about bicycle tyres.

  • I don't think anyone makes bike tyres in the uk. France, Germany, Italy, Czech have a little bit. Most are made in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand.

  • What are the options for fast road tyres in larger sizes? Ideally tubeless.
Schwalbe / Conti go up to 30/32mm. I've got clearance for up to 40mm, maybe 42 at a push (depends on the tyre) and would like to try bigger.

Rene Herse - are they any good?
Anything else that rolls fast when fat?

  • Pirelli Cinturato Velo go up to 35mm

  • Thanks, will look at them.

Bicycling rolling resistance is giving me Challenge Strada Bianca Pro HTLR
    https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/cx-gravel-reviews/challenge-strada-bianca-pro-htlr
    Anyone used them?

EDIT - just did some searches back in the thread and they sound positive, and come in 4omm. Might try them.

  • Rene herse are pretty good, and gravel kings too. Both fragile

  • Recommendations for durable road tyre, 28c is the rear limit for the Boardman.
GP5000tl gave 6212 ridden miles through London, some Chilterns, Herts, Bucks & Kent.
Will revert to Marathon Plus in absence of better suggestions.

  • Vittoria rubino. Or previously I had some vredesteins that went for a very long time. Marathon plus will last longer if you don't mind riding on garden hoses.

  • Schwalbe G-One Speed worth a look too, running 38mm tubeless at the moment and they roll pretty well.

  • garden hoses.

    Schwalbe must have improved them:
@hamrack once described them as 'wooden hoops'.

  • they are excellent. not the easiest to mount but tough and very fast.

do not recommend g-one speed. the really big ones handle weird and all of them seem slower than their predecessors

  • Have been running these for a while in 36. Great tire, roll great. Had a few punctures initially, but after switching to slightly heavier tubes they haven’t had any problems. I had the “race” version before these, but the “pro” version is miles better.

Nightmare to get on the rim the first time, but fine after that. The 36 measures 38.5 on my 25mm internal rims, maybe of interest.

Have been meaning to try out a pair of Vitorria Terreno Zero, are supposed to be a lot more puncture resistant according to bicyclerollingresistance. They also come in 38c

  • Thanks all, have ordered a pair of the Challenge ones.

  • Report back the state of your thumbs please ;-).

  • Yes, good point.
I broke a rim trying to use GP5000. It doesn't matter how good a tyre is if I can't get it on and off

  • I ordered a pair of Continental Grand Prix Urban, the name makes them sound like city bike tires, but bicyclerollingresistance makes them sound basically like big puncture resistant gp5000's. They're not quite your preferred 40mm, but heading in that direction, likely more so on wide rims (which hopefully stay intact during installation...).

Let's hope big high performance road tires are getting in vogue.

  • They are great

  • 700x40-45, what's the options for mostly road and venturing along the river Thames and canal paths? Looking to get a Sonder Camino soon so I'll finally be able to fit tyres over 32mm

  • Challenge strata bianche comes in 40… that seems to get a lot of love on the Internet
