Watch this video - but take the pawls out, before you use the pipe wrench, and you can reuse the whole block afterwards. I've done it dozens of times.

Yeah, take off the plate, eveything comes out for a service! To remove the block, use 2 small allen-heads to fill in where the main part of the pawl sits, and lock the assembly in a vice so that those heads provide an anchor while you rotate the wheel to undo. I use it all the time, it's better than a 2 prong tool, which always destroys the body, and usually the tool too. I think Sheldon may nave explained the technique better than me.
