    I hope this isn't too obvious to be worth mentioning, but it is a safety issue .

    The brake shoes in the front caliper are facing the wrong way - the closed end must be at the front.

    Nowadays virtually all brake shoes are closed at both ends, so this little point might get overlooked.

  • Ah, lol, good spot and appreciated. I actually rode a bike with them the wrong way around for, well, quite some time and someone kindly pointed out the danger!

    In other news someone sawed the pump pegs off at some point, which is a shame, so have a pair of ‘50’s chrome bolt-on ones on the way. Need a nice pump next.
    This weekend will also try and free the freewheel cog off and then start cleaning it up.
    Only not so good news at the moment is the seatpost appears to be stuck.

  • Cyclo pump clips arrived. They’re, well, mint. Which is a bit out of keeping lol
    Might have to leave them on the shed roof for a bit.

    I would have and do with fd’s on a frame, the pump clips are super narrow. Should I still cut a real thin bit of (cloth rim tape?) to those?

  • Also, Cyclo freewheels.
    It has two ‘slots’ which I guess means a two pronged sprocket to remove it? I’ve two but neither fit as my tools are likely 50 years to new. Is there a specific one?
    The faceplate of the thing (which is a lovely brass colour) is engraved with a ‘this way to undo arrow’ so that’s the way this is removed?

  • Refitted the Lytaloy headset.
    Cleaned the cups, amazing condition and hardly any brineling under the old grease. @anidel had saved all the bearings (super-star) so quick clean up of those, new grease, and everything is good.

    That's the way that plate is removed (it's the outer cone of the freewheel bearing): it has a left hand thread. The block itself has a righthand thread onto the hub - otherwise it would unscrew under pedal pressure!

    If you hope to re-use the block you will have to find a removing tool that is a near perfect fit to those slots. Any old established bike shop should have one.

    Don't forget the headset will almost certainly need re-adjustment after a short distance. They 'settle'.

    Headset adjustment is, I have found, super critical. Any looseness and the the bottom end will be ruined by pitting very rapidly - and this is nothing to do with the quality of the set. Don't go to the other extreme and have it too tight - that will also cause problems.

  • Yeah, take off the plate, eveything comes out for a service! To remove the block, use 2 small allen-heads to fill in where the main part of the pawl sits, and lock the assembly in a vice so that those heads provide an anchor while you rotate the wheel to undo. I use it all the time, it's better than a 2 prong tool, which always destroys the body, and usually the tool too. I think Sheldon may nave explained the technique better than me.

  • Perfect, noted, cheers. Wanted to get it all fitted so as not to lose any of the bits. Will do a proper adjustment once all is ready to roll (will be some time) with your advice in mind :)

    Or rather, is not such a simple removal situation for a simpleton like me. Consequently this will usually always result in me royally f*cking something up with a valuable component mashed rather than saved.
