Yeah, it was the statue of Rowland Hill - the guy who invented post - which is opposite what was the old Post Office building, which now seems to be a random office block.

Ah, so was the end point there on Newgate Street? I assume that's with reference to old records? The A1 starts in New Change, but I suppose it's much of a muchness.
