Yep! I've devised a "mechanism" involving magnets...
I'll get pockets recessed into the underside of each hatch lid leaving less than 1mm of surface veneer and then backfill each of these with a steel disc and some plywood so that when the hatch is closed there will be no visible handles or fasteners and to open there will be a pair of magnets on handles that will just lift them up...
At least this is the idea...
