I just found the source of noise on my metal mudguards. The front stays are very close to the disc brake mount and ever bump made them vibrate slightly and make an annoying metallic noise.

Never seen a straight stay on the brake side of the fork, mine have always been intricately bent in an S shape. Lewisham Cyclery fitted them for only £9 (!)

It looks like a longer mudguard clip would solve the problem, if the stay cannot be bent into shape.
