Ours did the same, 4 year old boiler. We just did it to keep things moving forward but it was only 60 or 70 quid.
I mean you'd need to service it to keep the warranty, depends if its in the year yet and pass the buck onto him if he wants to keep it.
FWIW, ask the person who fitted the boiler last year and you might get the first year's service at a reduced rate. we're getting ours done for £45.
