I'd really like to convert my S2L to 3 speed but i don't know if i can bring myself to run a friction shifter.

Some chat on Reddit suggests people are using a 3x front mtb shifter but i can't believe the pull ratio is the same

It doesn't need to be, because the upper and lower sprocket positions are set by the limit screws. The springs under the chainstay take up any additional travel in the cable. It would only not work if there was too little travel in the cable.

Not that I've tried it.

Nah. The limit screws are bullshit.
