  • Listen all y'all it's a Cabotage.....

  • Is that an 'Up to £50k/yr' sucker offer?

Back in the '80s one of the best paid driving jobs was working for an Oil company delivering fuel to petrol stations. Unionised and acknowledged as the peak of the Trade, with full employment benefits.

Supermarkets opened petrol stations, independents were squeezed out of the market,
    and,
Oil companies decided that fuel delivery was not a core business,
    and
hived off the function to logisitics specialists.

I'm assuming the Logisitics companies have further reduced the job to one of quasi-Self Employment to avoid paying for Holiday entitlement and pension contributions.

Oil and gas companies never really made any money selling petrol and diesel. It was always about the cheeky Twix at the checkout. When Supermarkets played that game, but on steroids, there was no point in the oil companies trying to compete.

    You assume correctly.

  • OK, so who else has already stocked the cupboards of everything needed for the entirety of the Christmas period that isn't fresh?

I'm getting ahead of the panic buying by panicking before everyone else does 😂

  • I think panic buying for christmas has already started a while ago, I personally don't know much I could stock up on except a ton of German Lebkuchen from Lidl.

  • I’ve just had my Christmas dinner, the sprouts were done to perfection.

  • the sprouts were done to perfection

You just binned them straight away?

  • I guess there'll be a boycott on Brussel sprouts anyway

  • FReEdOm SpROuTS

  • Panic buying? Where do they sell panic? I want some.

  • On the streets of London, Birmingham, Carlisle, Dublin, Dundee, Humberside.

  • No such place as Humberside. Disappeared 25 years ago.
    Gets off hobby horse......

  • Well I’ll burn your hobby horse down, who ya gonna call?
Not ghostbusters but maybe Humberside fire service to put out the flames, maybe Humberside police to have me arrested and perhaps they’ll report it on BBC radio Humberside.

  • I'm certain Morrissey will delighted to update the song,
as long as the new name for the administrative area scans.

  • I'd be concerned about who he might want to hang in the new lyrics though...

  • But you would have to give them an address to go to that wasn't Humberside.
The name, even on launch, was universally hated. Folks from the North bank never had anything in common with those from the South. But the biggest thing was losing Yorkshire.

  • I left Cleethorpes in 1970 and back then I'm sure we were in Lincolnshire.

  • Most of Us, probably.

  • Humberside, as a county, was 1974-1996.

  • Think it was this thread where we talked about picking recently
    https://twitter.com/IisBig1/status/1450356144493449216

  • Picking produce has been done by mostly immigrants in the Netherlands for years. Some farms as mechanizing more.

It's not unique to the UK the job isn't well paid (I believe in Germany you can get better pay) it's unique to the cons government and Brexit to make it super difficult for people from abroad to come in.

Farming is broken in many ways, hard to make a living, bank debt, hard to increase prices due to poverty of consumers, the UK doesn't produce nearly food for itself... I'm sure there are solutions ( land tax?) but this isn't it...

  • OK, so who else has already stocked the cupboards of everything needed for the entirety of the Christmas period that isn't fresh?

Me. Got two Islabikes for Nieces #2 and #3 delivered today.

  • I'm doing the opposite. While the missus is away I'm eating and drinking everything in the house.

It's ok though I live in an effluent (K&K) area so if we're struggling, I'll kill and eat old, rich people.
