• The guys that wrote Freakonomics quoted a guy who studied Chicago (low level) drug dealers.
    These low level guys handed over all the money they took because they were younger and less well armed than the levels of drug gang hierarchy above them.
    The low level guys were on barely more than minimum wage, but had no plausible exit strategy, and the remote prospect of living long enough for 'promotion'.

    The machete-wielding bike thieves are probably on pain of real pain to hand over a couple of high end bikes a day, in return for subsistence 'wages'.

  • The guy quoted gave alot more information when he explained the system. Was fascinating to an outsider like me.
