you'd be millionaires, Rodney

It's finally time to tell my mum she was wrong...
"you'll never get a job if you just play video games all day!"

How long would it take to get a following big enough to support playing as a professional? I mean, I have loads of free time right now, but how long would one actually need to earn a may minimum wage, or maybe couple a grand a month?
-
• #26030
could be a month could be years, it's about how well you can entertain an unknown amount of strangers on a live stream. Being good at a game is only part of one route to it.

Someone in the research group I am part of has done some stuff around twitch and the creator economy. I think one of the difficulties people have with it is you need to be doing it every day without ever taking a holiday
-
• #26032
Yeah I've read a few things about the mental impact on the streamers who feel if they take an extra minute off it'll directly affect their subscriber count and therefore their income. It's a very precarious way to live with no real exist strategy
-
• #26033
But is there a graph representing number of views / subscribers vs cash?
-
• #26034
dunno but I heard roughly do a 2.5x subscriber amount per month. But it depends because if you run more adds you get more money and if you have more subscribers you can get a better "partner" deal for a bigger %
-
• #26035
you could cross reference the leaked streamers pay with something like twitchtracker to get an idea?

Proper OG Ghost Recon is free on Ubi Connect.
Grabbed it last night but worried its age will tarnish very fond memories.

Not quite the same age, but OG Splinter Cell games still hold up very well. Did love the OG Ghost Recon games

The streaming thing is such an interesting one; I find the really big streamers very difficult to watch, it's always such over the top americanisms (Nick Mercs, TTT, Tfue, Dr Disrespect etc...). They rake it in because the American market is so huge & seemingly that's what they like.
For me, success in streaming is 90% how entertaining people find you, not how good you are at whatever you're playing. Out of that list you have to go down a fair way to find the people that are winning the tournaments - Ayden for example wins a lot of competitions but is a relatively dull/not engaging streamer (still earning a chunk though).
I think it would be very difficult for a UK based streamer to start now & gain enough of the market to earn enough to not have to have another job but still lead a normal life. There are a few that are probably making enough; Tommey (British but based in the US), Fifakill & Jukeyz (they're in the UK but have to play in the US overnight to earn a wage), BennyCentral (mostly works for Xbox but streams on Youtube too) but they've all been grinding for years.
Twitch is full of channels of people streaming all day & night to less than 100 people (most of whom won't be paying anything), when you'd probably want, I don't know, 1k subscribers per month maybe to pay for rent, food, clothes etc?
Really difficult but doable I suppose if you've got some entertaining USP. -

ChainBreaker being entertaining? No way. :)

Alan Wake remaster is good. Already a great game, but plays real well on new Xbox.

Metroid dread out tomorrow.
Looks sharp. -

Had a blast with Diablo 2 Resurrected for a while, but this weekend was ridiculously bad, servers down, rollbacking, 2 hours of gametime vanished, items and levels deleted etc. Blizzard has been shit for a good while, but this is straight up absurd in 2021.

Completed Dying Light DLC... Good twist at the end.
But I definitely preferred the first one.
Really looking forward to DL2

Have watched a load of the 2042 game play now, I'll see what its like at launch but im not in a rush to buy it any more so many flaws
-
• #26046
I've been so tempted to get back into it but glad it doesn't work on Mac. I could see myself spending hours and hours on this just farming away
-
• #26047
To be fair it's great fun. But then I'm playing on my Xbox sat on the sofa not really fussed about the whole rushing through the game thing.
-
• #26048
Yeah, but I know I'll find myself farming Mephisto for hours trying to get item X or Y

Fired up Wolf:Enemy Territory the other day, had a blast, although I sucked. Still one of the top objective based team shooters imo! Which is mad considering it was released as a freebie nearly 20 years ago.

Way before I joined LFGSS I was on a different forum with @dapthechap and we used to have a server for this.
I was exceptional at playing the engineer and knew every little wall climb, hidey hole and short cut to hit the objectives in the shortest time possible to the point my catchphrase was Instawin™, which also meant I knew how to stop any other sneaky bastard trying to attack our objectives other than head on.
great days.
Makes me wish I’d got a capture device back in 2007 when me and my mates were big into Halo 3. Could have been a massive streamer now couldn’t I.
