Protected species, Hericium erinaceus, also named Bearded Tooth or Tree Hedgehog, which is confusing as hedgehog's are super tasty and easy to ID.
Interesting but still unclear as to why. Reading between the lines i assume because of its commercial value...? I'll have to read up on it.
