It's just the twin slot system from Ironmongerydirect. Nicked the idea from Senorbear (no longer of this parish). The boards are pine from skirtingboardsdirect, I gave them two coats of UV stable teak oil from Liberon.
I had ruled out that setup for alcoves
Why's that? Just for looks or some other concern?

Still happy to have seen the back of the brick monstrosity. Fireplace is just held in place by two screws in the side that go into battens fixed to the wall. So it can come off easy to finish the tiling and painting.
