embarrassingly I've still hardly ridden the purple caad...50t would be too big, 46t could work but I imagine it's going to cost more than the j&l? (£30)

SHAME! It'd be my perfect winter bike now....Yeah afraid the 46t is DA 9100 compatible only. It's very nice though. And not as expensive as you'd perhaps fear. Did I mention I also have the matching DA cranks for sale? They a little more expensive mind!

I have a 46t Garbaruk and a 50t Wolftooth. Reasonable price is…?
The Wolftooth is fairly compatible with most arms.
The Garbaruk is for Dura Ace.
