  • Just carpet all the rooms and be done with it

  • 😔 why you doing me dirty like that

  • It's all circular, catch that wave early on, be somebody!

  • install cork u coward

  • Despite long-running efforts to mitigate, been let down by door company (no fire doors of any size in stock until November).

Anyone used a reliable firm lately - range of fire and non-fire sizes in four panel design. Not 'Vibrant' - they're the ones that don't have stock, even though still shows on their site they do. I think a lot of firms might be guilty of that. Get your order and hope you wait.

  • I got my 4 panel fire doors from wickes. I don't know jack about doors but they seem really good quality to me.

  • Thanks - will have a look.

  • Builder Depot worth checking out as well

  • I got mine from Howdens. Once I got through to someone they were able to tell me what store/warehouse had them in stock and could transfer between locations.

  • You can it will just trigger me :)

I'm sure you're doing it tastefully. There have been a lot of 'developer led' refurbs round our way with some use of Crittal-style windows which taste forgot. Particular highlight being boxing in the stairs with a massive wall of said windows, indoors...

The back of ours is going to be all modern windows so don't get me wrong I'm no it must be Victorian facist.

  • That's a risk I'm willing to take!

Let's hope so. It's going to be a really expensive mistake if I hate it...

  • Couple of tiling questions... What's the standard grout gap between tiles, 3mm? Can this vary?

And what's the general feeling with tile placement? Start at the top and work down? From the floor to ceiling? Or start from the centreline of the wall out to the floor and ceiling so you have tiles that are trimmed to the same width?

I'm just getting my head around a few things... I'm about to make a scale drawing of our new bathroom with everything exactly where it's going to go. These little variables I hadn't considered are driving me a bit crazy, I want as few surprises as possible when the builders are in...

First panic was when I realised a grab rail we're putting in would clash/interfere with the rail on the shower we've chosen... That was the first hardware change... Now I'm obsessing about the nook we're putting in and what height that's got to be at in relation to the tiles, etc, etc... It goes on and on... *tears non-existent hair out*

  • Grout width can vary depending on style / location of tiles.

Have the builders subbed a proper tiler? Its one of those things where it's done better by a specialist - they will be able to consider the variables (size of room / facilities placement / size, colour, shape of tiles / location of windows, height of room etc etc )

The danger of you specifying this yourself is that you are not a tiler ;) BUT it's good to understand the principles so that you can ask your builder the right questions.

Also if you go down the rabbit hole of how to do it properly you will notice when it's not done properly!

  • This its the reason I started this thread!
One thing I forgot to do when planning my bathroom is how grout lines would line up with toilet and sink edges, I made sure everything was evenly spaced but in hindsight should have focussed on grout lines instead.
With tiling you are meant to start from the centre of the room/wall I believe.

2-3mm is usual on walls. 3-5mm with floor tiles. Depends how regular they are. if 'rustic', you'll need a bit more space, if very even grout can be thinner.

Placement depends a bit on room layout. If you have a bath, I'd start from the top of that with a full tile as that is the most visible line. Or window level. Otherwise I would start from the bottom and then work up so the only part tiles are at the ceiling.

You see this bothers me, I kinda feel like I wanna see a full tile at the top of the room, not at the floor line... Something to bear in mind when I mock/muck it up...

It will be done by a professional tiler, I'm just trying to second guess every situation... Once a designer, etc...

So, pattern! I think I'm gonna go with a horizontal grid pattern, because it's clean... Again, I'll have to mock this up... Floor tiles will do the same following the direction of the longest side of the room... I'm hoping I'll chance on a nice natural spot for our nook. Tiles are 600mm X 300mm which I think will be plenty big enough, was even thinking about going 1200mm X 300mm but that might be OTT... The drawing will not lie!!

I'm gonna do this in InDesign... 🤪 If I've got any time left on my 7-day free trial, I fear it may have elapsed!!

  • Fair enough. It really does depend on the room layout. The shower I did that I'm looking at now starts full from the bottom and has half a tile at the ceiling - would definitely look worse with the half at the bottom as that is much more in the eyeline - IMO. (shower pic)
The other 2 bathrooms I've done were started at the top of the bath. One I finished with a full tile and trim just below the ceiling as there was a (not straight) 1-2cm gap and I couldnt be arsed to try and cut tiles that thin to fit. (bath pic) Down to floor level was hidden behind sink unit so didn't matter. The other was around a fitted bath and had a part tile at the ceiling as per the shower one.
Very much not a pro though!

  • Thanks for all the door tips. Tried them all but couldn’t find a place that had one design in all the sizes needed. My (sorry, the) builder has come through with a connection though so all good there.

    Plaster going off nicely now.

  • What brand/type? Anything you dislike about it?

  • Very impressive, Ru!

Knocked up the drawings today... It was a huge relief to see where everything is gonna go, really put my mind at ease... Figured out where our nook is going, how I want the tiles laid, where the hand shower is going, all useful stuff... 🙃

  • Think it was the colour flooring Co, bought a roll which was a bitch to fit but no complaints now it’s down. I did mess up laying it but it just about functions.

  • Glasgow forumers, any recommendations for an architect or architectural technician to do design and warrant stuff for a kitchen extension and remodel? Simple and cheap but nice kinda vibes. @cozey perhaps?

  • Any front door suggestions for a 1950s red brick semi?

Looked at London Door Co but they neatly stop at the 30s then jump to modern.

    Cheers.

  • Cozey recommended Karen Moir who just yesterday sent me over a price outline. she seems nice and I've heard good things from other people irl too

  • Thanks. Thinking of some for my utility/workout space
