The stance of this thread seems to be "Well it's at least something." Regardless of whether a new electric car has a smaller carbon footprint than an old car run into the ground, we won't hit CO2 targets by electrifying the current fleet and continuing to drive as much as we currently do, and even if we did we would need another planet to strip mine for the resources. This is again, aside from all the other problems with cars.
I do obviously understand that we live in a hell world where private car ownership is mandatory. My point is that I don't think the personal choice to own an electric car does anything to take us out of here and is just siding with the status quo. I get that some people here have made their peace with this. We all have to get through the day somehow, but the idea that choosing an electric car instead of a petrol one will save any of us from the coming climate tribunals seems like one that's worth puncturing.

As an EV ignoramus, I found this pretty informative: https://ig.ft.com/electric-car/

I need a car for a few weeks over Christmas. Going to be another on.to lease, and it will used to get up to Scotland and back so range/charge speed important. Will have 2 bikes inside (external racks aren’t allowed) so space is a thing too.
Looking at the Q4 but maybe the ID.3 pro is sufficient. Otherwise the Jaguar thing or Model 3 (though the lower boot may limit bike options). Of course maybe nothing available in December and I end up with a fiesta from Europcar instead.

might wanna check what the charging infrastructure is like en route and at your destination before you commit.

Yeah, it’s just Stirling so no problems there - not deepest darkest north

Get a Niro and borrow my roof rack, it clamps onto the roof rails in a non intrusive manner....

Was it in here that I read that if everybody in the UK switched to EVs overnight with current tech, we'd tie up 11% of the world's current copper supply?
-
• #385
Ah, here we go.
https://www.reuters.com/article/sponsored/copper-electric-vehicle
Its 11% of current copper demand. Each full EV takes about 80kg of copper. There's plenty of copper to go around though, and given that its infinitely recyclable it shouldn't be such a big deal (other than destroying the earth to get it out of the ground)
Even so, such a massive commodity shift.

Only until we transition to a post-Brexit high wage economy where our newly invigorated entrepreneurs have developed copper replacements based Welsh slate, Cornish granite and Unicorn jizz.
-
• #387
But where will we find a regular supply of low wage workers willing to wank off unicorns? Someone in the supply chain has to be low wage...
-
• #388
Give the unicorns tripod mounted flesh lights hooked up to milking machines. They can do it themselves.
But then somebody would need to maintain the unicorn fleshlights and milking machines. There is no solution!

Prison-slavery. No low-wage workers in our economy as we don't pay them anything.

Inmates wanking off unicorns. Can see it in the next Conservative manifesto.
-
• #391
Priti will be tweeting it by next week.
'I will do everything in my power to have these protesters wanking unicorns by the end of next week. It's unacceptable behaviour in modern britain'

Inmates wanking off unicorns who are deported as the Unicorn climaxes. Can see it in the next Conservative manifesto.

Has anyone here any experience or knowledge on EV swaps?
-
• #394
Just need to transition from copper to fibre last mile telephone networks and we free up a load of copper!
(Okay, probably not enough for electric cars but about half the market cap of BT)

On.to dont have Niros, but thanks for the offer - and if they change their minds I will be in touch (though - do roof racks smash your motorway range?)
-

Yep, I'm having a moment of madness regarding my Forester build and considering going EV instead of V8 but need to suss it out yet...

This is in fact the government's level up policy! You no longer have to wank off unicorns as you'll be higher skilled and can maintain the machines instead... You know, empty them when they're full and clean them out, etc

Are tongues allowed?
The market has answered that yes it does to meet demand
