remember recording from the top 40 countdown on cassette and trying to chop the track as soon as the DJ started talking.

Yep. We had a guy at school who did this religiously every week, then we'd all tape his tape to have something to listen to in the car that week.

I taped Top of the Pops and managed to include my mother in the background shouting that I had to come downstairs immediately because I was in trouble.
Every time I listened to it I jumped and came out in a cold sweat.
