I became an amazing friend with a young chap who took me every site to see, all the secret food places to go just truly made the place great every time I was there and purely out of enjoyment of his country.
It was only on the 4th I discovered while at his parents for dinner his dad was the most senior person in the Omani army outside the sultans family and generally just a hugely powerful man. Never mentioned it he just liked being a friend and maybe being treated normally.
I absolutely love Oman. I truly love it.
Agreed - it was about my tenth visit to the country, and I'm blown away by the hospitality and scenery every time. Dhofar/Salalah the only region I'm yet to explore. Actually got to experience the kindness of the Omanis on this trip first hand. I set off at a silly time of day and was a little concerned I would run out of water. Luckily, as it was a Friday afternoon, there were lots of locals huddled under trees on the mountain sharing coffee and lunch. One group of young guys called me over for a chat as I was just starting the final ascent and insisted I sat down and filled up with cold water, dates and halwa. They asked how long it would be before I came back down, and said they would have lunch ready for when I did! Think it could be a great country to do a tour for a couple of weeks.
