Printer reccomendations

  • Ok, I'm doing some leg-work too, trawling Google/other forums, but wondered if anyone had any reccomendation or advice regarding a new printer which I have to source.

I've had Epson R1800s and an Epson Pro 4800. The 4800 is great for really quality prints, but slow, so I end up using the R1800 for draught prints, text documents etc. Thing is now it keeps going catatonic on me all the time, think it might be on its way out, although I need to try it on another computer to check.

Boss man says we can get a new one in so I'm thinking a colour lazer might be the best thing, so I have one really high quality large format inkjet and one really fast (if lower qaulity) lazerjet.

Any of you designery types have any products you're willing to rep?

  • Full Disclosure
HP are one of my clients
    Full Disclosure

Just finished working on HPs latest Colour Laserjet campaign for small to medium size business and there payback and trade-in offers are really appealing: www.HP.com/uk/LaserJet

    Worth taking a look.

  • Cool, looks good, I'll have a proper look tomorrow.

    Nice site BTW.

  • Just weighing up new printer options.

So these inkjets are really cheap but they make the money back from you on ink refills.
I like the idea of buying a small colour laser printer. Does any one know if a colour laser would last a few years longer than a cheap inkjet?

  • Laser printers are great but are limited in terms of the picture quality they can produce. A good inkjet shits all over lasers but if its just for documents etc, get a laser.

  • I figured the best place to print photos is still via Snappy snaps etc.?

I need colour documents and figure something like an Epson Aculaser will keep on going for trucking for 2000 prints before needing £100 worth of toner plugged into it. Basically I wil probably never need to buy toner.

  • I need a new printer for home use. Mainly black and white, printing out my gibberish university work.
The last printer I had a £45 cannon got thrown out he window.

I want it to last 4 years. So am happy to spend a bit more to get something decent.

If it can print at faster than snail pace that would be good

I don't need to print out hi res images.

Scanning would be good, - feeder scanner. So I can scan notes in.

    Any recommendation?

  • Hmmmh. I try to get Canon or Ricoh to sponsor you to ride RAAM in four years time?

  • This is very good.

  • Would I be better with a laser though? Buying ink seems to add up.

  • Brother uk are into cycling!

  • Buy one of the samsung cheapo lasers. Cheap to buy and cheap to run. I can vouch for their longevity.

Use your phone and google drive to capture your notes.

  • Thanks. And google drive scan, didn't know about hat. But use google drive so will work well. Nice one.

  • What’s the current cheap to buy cheap to run choice for a cheapo laser?

  • Does a printer exist that isn't a complete fucking cunt?

  • I’ve yet to meet one, unless you can get a HP Laserjet 4 that can talk to a modern computer and for which you can still get toner. We had one from about 1993 and it lasted many years. Then computers got too clever for it or something, and we switched to something new and crap.

  • I bought a £100 Brother HL-2350 that only does black and white, one page at a time.
    Seems to just work.

I pretty much need it for printing postage labels once a month. The more expensive but shit inkjet I had before ended up drying out in between usages because I used it so rarely so that got donated.

  • This was me last night. Needed a postage label. Have a c480x or something by Samsung/now HP and every time I turn off WiFi or disconnect ethernet or usb or whatever the fuck I need to reinstall it. But last night it wouldn't even reinstall. tried hard resets. Even reinstalled OS this morning. Tried multiple devices. It's being recycled and I'm going to get a dedicated label printer.

  • A new set of inks for my printer cost £70. I only use it for photos, and some b&w documents.

What’s a cheap to run inkjet I can replace it with?

  • Have you checked refilled ones from whatever that charity who does them is?

  • Last time I tried refilled cartridges the chip didn’t like it, and some didn’t work. I’ll give it another look though, cheers.

  • I found these were compatible with mine https://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk/

It still packed up in the end though so I bought a laser printer.
