Nice photos! And truth spoken!
What is happening with the Jamis then? Why not give that claris and cable disc brakes?

jamis looking good!

Calling a mudguard a fender is an itch I have not scratched up until now...
You are obviously right about the Jamis Hulsroy. I was tempered to sell it due to the high demand for steel “gravel” frames, but Claris/Sora and cable discs it is. That gives me 6 months to source a pair of levers...

Went for a ride yesterday, was horrible. Wind turned so I had a headwind the entire way - Not how I had planned it.
However, I love using this bike as a road bike and ending up on gravel sections by chance. And yes. I did steal my daughters rear light.

Ah man i love that Dirty Disco, exactly the kind of bike i'd like if i actually rode my bikes anywhere remotely interesting. Any idea what a more modern equivalent might be?

Hah, good question. To be honest it’s just an open mould cx frame. Mine is not even a real Dirty Disco as I bought it directly from China.
I read somewhere the geo is a bit weird with a super steep st and slack ht, clearance isn’t great, it only has eyelets for bottle mounts and it’s a size too small for me because people have always told me I’m short, so I believed it and bought a small frame.
I’ve been cycling for 20 years and I don’t know how a bike is supposed to handle or what geo does, or how a fork can make a bike come alive. All my bikes just feels like bikes. It really isn’t special and the build is a mess:
- Aero wheels with 36mm tires
- “Gravel” cowbells
- That Thomson seat post
- 46/36 for road - it’s the best
- And the final piece I’ve been trying to keep a secret in here - a Nishiki saddle from some random hybrid (but I just always thought it was comfortable).
It’s my go to bike because it goes where I point it. Any cx, gravel or even a modern road frame with a bit of tyre clearance could do the same.
I went back and found some pictures from one of my best trips - riding up Mt. Ventoux on one of the fire roads on 32mm cyclocross speed tires in 2017.
So many questions there. “Can you ride gravel on 32mm?”, “Will Tour de France ever go up that gravel road?”, “Have you had the same bike since 2017?”TL;DR “just get an arkose” 😄

Haha nice review, I'm sure it's not the perfect "do it all" bike but it looks simple and fun. My partner has a Genesis Datum she picked up cheap in mini person size that I'm always jealous of, this reminds me of that.

Sounds like you should get a Datum 😉
On another note, I have received these goodies from some of the nicest people on this forum.
It’s quite a supply chain: Maj->spotter->Hulsroy->JesperXT->meNow I need to figure out where to use them

you should put them on ur bike imo
top 5 spots for stickers on the bike
1: on the seat tube under the bottle cage
2: on the seat tube just above the bb shell
3: on the rear of the seat tube, just below the seat stay welds
4: on the headtube, over a brand decal
5: on the top tube 5-7 cm before the head tube (rectangle stickers only) -

Number one is under top tube, right? Or is above the bb and below the bottle cage so good that it gets both first and second place?

Bought a set of 685 hydro shifters recently and just finished bleeding them. Right one kept doing bubbles in the funnel, and then I saw bubbles coming out of the side of the lever. Not a great sign.
Tightened up the three torx screws and that fixed it. I might have gotten a bit enthusiastic so I think I squeezed the seal a bit. At least I know where the problem might come from if they start to get spongy, and less than one hour to set it all up and bleed a set is so ok that I would do it again.
Just bought a liter of mineral oil and this is the “after” picture. This must be what is referred to as “a lifetime supply”.And finally old vs new hoods. At £10 it’s such a good upgrade as there are more knobs on the inside and the hood is tighter than the original ones supplied with the levers.

A few new projects in the stable.
1)
Omnium Mini aka the ugliest bike in the world.
JesperXT picked it up for me at a local bike jumble. Came with a box of mostly dead parts an a rear wheel, that runs like new after a quick bearing replacement. Fortunately the kickstand was in the box.
I’m building a 406 front wheel for it instead of the horrible 451 that is original to it.

2) Salsa El Mariachi
Bought off of here, and with the support of some lovely forumengers it is slowly making its way towards me.I can’t have a red bike, so this will get a respray inspired by the iconic stem and be built as a mtb with a bouncy fork.

Finished the omnium. Ugliest bike in the world, but I’m quite surprised by how nice it is to ride.
Unfortunately it feels a bit too big for me, so will probably sell it on.

I’m also building my younger cousin a bike. He is a wonderful young man, but he has had a rough couple of years.
Last time I saw him I realized that he takes 3 different subways and trains to get to his high school 7km away. The route from his home takes him through a nice forest and even a small detour can take him on some wonderful gravel roads. So I offered to build him a bike and he is really looking forward to it and wants to build it with me and learn how to do it.His father is italian, and when this popped up locally I bought it on a whim. Huge clearance for tires and mudguards and lots of potential but I have to cut back on the German touring look. I hope to make it nice enough to get him into using it, but I also don’t want to force my ideals of cycling onto him. It’s a hard balance.
I’ve added saddle and seatpost so far

I’m hoping that the Colnago can run 1x9 without a narrow wide chainring and without a clutched derailleur.
I know it’s a bit of a stretch, so I followed this guide, and increased the spring tension on this long arm ultegra 6600 derailleur. Was so easy to do. Fingers crossed it will work good enough to keep the chain on. 🤞🏼https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/rear-derailleur-overhaul

This looks great. Wish I had the opportunity to have a mini cargo... And a tandem if we're writing Christmas letters. (One day, when I live in a ground floor flat or a house - because hauling those things up stairs is far from ideal).
Top sticker selection too.
The life you ordered has arrived

Mariachi is here and has a nice new paint, so I’ve started putting parts on it. I need grips and tyres, but I’ve been out of the mtb game for a decade, and can’t decide if 2.4 is too big for me at 72kg.
I’m thinking Rekon up front and Ikon rear, but I want that gumwalls so it’s only 2.4.
What are my other xc options for trails like this?
