  • +1 to all that

  • Do you really think this is relevant for a 7yo
on nearly flat terrain on skis for the first time? (Assuming we're not talking chunks of ice and ungroomed snow like kboy is)

  • Can't quite believe all the chat that piste conditions don't effect how easy it is to learn. Slushy is not too bad, but fuck the really hard icy stuff. No one "likes" skiing on ice. Getting off first lifts when yesterdays slushy snow has been groomed into rock-hard corduroy can be "interesting".

Getting pretty pissed off with my google photos this week reminding me of my trip to Kosovo 4 years ago...(just a boast post really). I'd do any thing to be back in the mountains. This last week of WFH with homeschool has nearly tipped us over the edge, and being reminded of better times does not help - but here you go!

  • Guess I'm saying is to take it easy and don't take anything for granted. What seems easy and straightforward to you seems complex, confusing and difficult to a beginner.

    Thats not what I'm saying.

What i'm saying is that a 7y0 on skis for the very first time on a bunny slope is not badly affected by snow conditions. Which is what I thought we were talking about, ignoring my comment about my instructor correctly pointing out that I had the skills to ski on ice when I was an early intermediate.

  • Let’s all just reminisce about days on the slopes instead. I fucking miss it.

Could be worse. I get pictures from Cycliste most weekends at the moment showing her ski touring with blue skies and plenty of fresh snow. While I'm stuck in the flatlands with a grey sky and permadrizzle.

  • Yup. Google photos can get in the bin.

Turns out that at this time of year "on this day in" for the last 8 years or so, I was having fun in the snow.

  • Yep. Google photos at the moment just seems to be a constant reminder that things are a bit shit at the moment compared to years previous.

  • Where's this?

  • Brezovica in Kosovo

It's a tiny resort with two lifts (one running at a time on alternate days). You pay for the lift by the ride (1 euro a go, cash in hand). It was built as the reserve options for the Sarajevo winter Olympics in case there was no snow in Sarajevo (a not uncommon issue). In the end there was enough a snow, so it never really got used.

Now it's mainly kosovans skiing in jeans on a jolly, but it's actually pretty high and snow sure. As no one can ski, the powder stays until someone who can turns up. Do not go if you or anyone you're with is learning - the piste basher is generally broken so it's just moguls covered in falling kosovons under the lifts. Do go if you're into Quince Schnapps.

  • Right up my ally that

  • Bit of powder to be found in pockets on the edges of fields near the Col du Skelly this morning

  • Damn!

One of my favourite bike riding spots, and you can hit powder turns there. That is amazing.

    How did you get there?

  • I drove up the Limpsfield road. A few huge snowdrifts on the side but was OK. Beddlestead itself was unpassable: (not my van!)

  • How's the access there? Likely to get shot at by a farmer?

  • The N Downs way goes across the fields there so I think they'd be hard pushed to get cross, especially when there are no crops yet or livestock.

  • Hmm may check it out at the weekend if you haven't skied it out by then

  • If it stays cold and wind keeps coming from the East, it will fill in pretty quickly don't worry

  • @amey who’s got enduros in stock?

  • Plenty left to go at this morning still by Titsey

  • I've fallen into the trap of getting invited on a ski holiday, without knowing how - and without owning any gear that isn't for cycling.

Anyone got any (cheap-ish) gear that they can't be bothered to stick on Ebay or take down the charity shop? 34/36" waist 40/42" chest. Aka a Rapha Large.

  • Decathlon or TK Maxx will get you decent stuff for fairly cheap.
Cycling base layers/jacket can do a lot of the rest. Layer up rather than buying one really heavy duty ski jacket.

  • Layer up rather than buying one really heavy duty ski jacket.

This in spades! Would also recommend that approach for trousers too. A pair of softshell trousers with the option of a base layer underneath is far better than having loads of insulation. Learning to ski is fun and surprisingly easy but when you're not used to the movements, its hot and hard work!

Edit: ^ above advice only applies to typical European skiing weather!
