  • And 70% of stats are made up or the confidence intervals are mad.

  • We'd be looking for 6 maybe 7 bedrooms. So I guess not that big overall.

  • Named after the buried Fillebrook that once flowed through what's now Wood Street, Leytonstone and Leyton, the Filly Brook does very tasty Hiroshima style okonomiyaki.

  • Then enlighten me

    1. It isn't the rest of the world's responsibility to stop you pontificating from a position of ignorance.
    2. This is the golf club bar thread, so it would be particularly inappropriate to interfere.
  • okonomiyaki

they don't serve that stuff in the 19th hole.

  • Just to add my own two penn'orth to this discussion. We live on less than 18 grand a year and have two young kids. I'm a potter and my wife is a writer. I set up my business months before covid hit so it's been a pretty torrid time. We're trying to buy a small house to get away from the insecurity and stress we've had to put up with from two terrible landlords over the past 5 years. Both situations have been shockingly bad, and both have been unavoidable due to being the only places we could afford. Unfortunately we keep being priced out of buying even the worst places in the area in which we live. Yes I appreciate that I have chosen a career in which I won't get much money and I accept that, but I work my ass off to develop my business and give our kids a life and I don't really see why we should have to put up with the insecurity of bad renting and the impossibility of housing currently. I guess we all have our struggles in life, whatever our income.

  • 9k/yr each w/ 2 kids and you are looking to buy a house?

You're either 100 years old, live in Scotland, bad at maths, have forgotten about the 50k in inheritance or there's a serious trick I've missed.

  • .

  • World’s friendliest forum etc

  • Managed to save a deposit by being very frugal, got a small gift from family, live in Scotland etc.

You act as if it's wrong of us to want our own place.

  • Not at all, just against the tone of this thread.
You might qualify for child tax credit based on your income circumstances if you are claiming child benefit already? Can also be taken into account by mortgage lenders to help affordability.

Very opposite to the tax the children, buy more golf clubs conversation.

  • A dubious honour to have finally made it here!

  • No, I was the one arguing for having houses. Having heard all the stories about saving for a deposit here I was impressed you could do it off that income. London is quite a different story though I guess.

  • London is quite a different story though I guess.

    Like, fucking hell

  • Why does anyone even want to own in London anymore

  • People who've lived here 10 years want to get out. People that haven't want to move in?

  • Because it's not too bad for everyone.

I live close enough I can get into the city relatively easily for culture, but far enough out that I'm in proper green space is a few minutes, and I can do all of this with the luxury of not needing a car. Yes there are compromises but the positives massively outweigh the negatives for us right now.

Keeping a firm eye on my privilege, I'm lucky in that I could quite easily live anywhere else in the country/world, but that would mean upheaval for all of us as we'd lose contact with the local friends we have. I've lived in London for 20 years and don't want to get out (yet). Maybe that'll change in 7 years when my daughter is old enough to do her own thing.

As for owning, again that's a question of luck and timing. I couldn't now afford to buy a similar property in the area I currently live in.

  • @Jw89 you have a website? Love a nice bit of pottery

  • Yeah renting has been a manageable struggle (moving every year, rents doubling or more)
Can't imagine wanting to be here more permanently, but that's a me problem I guess

  • Maybe that'll change in 7 years when my daughter is old enough to do her own thing.

That’s exactly when you do want to be here

  • moving every year, rents doubling or more

That's the crux of it, isn't it.

You shouldn't need to break your back or luck out to buy a place just so you can get your accommodation expenditure down to a realistic level and have some security.

Then you could invest your savings and have them channelled into business that do stuff and employ people, rather than perpetuating property inflation.
