What is the alternative? All property owned by the state until you can afford to buy? Who do you buy it from?

Yes, because paying off a mortgage instead of contributing to a mortgage is a thing.
Both of them you do while paying income tax so I still don't see what you're getting at.
"Should be" is the reason I will not be handing anything over to the government. As if I'd rely on those cunts to sort out my wellbeing. The whole point of smashing repayments into a house and not a pension was so if everything turned to shit I'd still have a roof over my head whereas a pension is useless until you retire and even then might be fucking useless depending on where its invested.

I bought a house and paid all the tax/stamp duty etc on it. I save for another 10 years and buy a bigger second house because now I've got kids or want to move to the country or whatever - I'm a parasite because I want to rent it instead of sell it? What if I want to keep that first house in case moving was a bad idea, I can't afford the second mortgage due to change in life circumstance yada yada
Or what if you meet someone and live in their house - are you forced to sell yours? What if the relationship fails?
If I sold the first one I guess I could've kept the money in the bank but that's just dumb - it would be put into the second house.
I've kinda lost track of what even the point is now. I think this thread and I hate are turning into twitter comments and it's just going to be easier to ignore them.
