So Marin hybrid ( 1994 ) stolen this week - I have the original bike shop receipt for the princely sum of Ā£ 389 (790 odd now according to Bank of England inflation calculator ) and Ā£600 worth of receipts from 2018 for upgraded parts (everything new except f+f basically ) it should be covered on my contents but any idea how direct line will approach this ? Equivalent bike would be - I guess- a low range genesis CDf kinda - or one of the 1k ish Marin urban grav-grav offerings .

I've no experience with Direct Line, but based on my experience with other insurers they will offer you an equivalent brand new bike, or the cash that the equivalent new bike would cost

Thanks - so direct line have offered 785 cash - calling a modern Marin muirwoods an equivalent frame and components- it could be worse - but do I argue the toss on equivalency ? request additional cash to cover rear rack, guards and lights (which I provided receipts for) or just be grateful and take the 585 (after 200 excess) ?

I'd argue. A few years back with Aviva I had similar where the equivalent they offered had many inferior components so I did a calculation including the upgraded components and they saw my point and increased their offer.
The only place you may run into issues is if you run into your stated replacement value. So if you insured it stating that a replacement would be 1k, they're not going to give you 1500 to replace. They will say you are under-insured.

Anyone familiar with something like communal bike insurance... I'm considering buying a cargo bike for use within my apartment building/community... Wondering if someone has done similar and could recommend insurers... suspect I'd need a specialist insurance for it really, but maybe bikmo or Laka might be interested?

Massive thanks to the person who just used my referral code for Laka.

Taking a bike on holiday. Whatās the best way to insure it (mainly concerned about baggage handlers).

How does a claim work with Laka?
Crashed a couple of days ago for the first time since having an insurance iwth them, have yet to assess the damage on the bike, but potentially broken a shifter and bent the mech hanger. Do they need to assess the damage somehow (eg LBS) or just send pictures? Do they offer a compensation first or you simply get replacement refunded?

You have to record a short video describing the damage and upload it to the website. Couldnāt have been easier when my partner had half the parts stolen off her bike. When Evans said they couldnāt get a replacement fork for her Pinnacle, Laka wrote it off and ordered her a new bike of her choice from any supplier. Even allowed her to top up the cost beyond the insured value.

I knew nothing of this. Pedalcover have just emailed me saying they won't renew my home contents (see Owning Own Home thread questions) insurance because their new underwriter has my place as a subsidence risk. Riiight.
I was a loyal customer, even fan, of theirs. Very personal service at the start, nice team, etc. But if this is where brand loyalty gets me, well, "not happy Jan" as the ad goes.

Are there any home contents insurers that will cover very expensive bikes or is everyone moving over to bike specific coverage and keeping home contents insurance separate?
-
• #1024
The NFU (National Farmers Union) cover all my bikes (sadly all quite expensive) on my household policy, we have to list them as specific items but their coverage is incredible and no quibble. I've had to make 5 claims in the last decade and all have been dealt with super efficiently. The additional cost of adding the bikes to the policy is peanuts compared to bike specific insurance. You don't have to be a farmer to be insured with them but I know that they don't cover everyone...

Dumb question but for people that have had to make claims on there bike specific insurance is there any obligation to notify car or home insurers at renewal time?
From memory there is a fairly standard "have you made any other claims" question but i don't know how far afield that refers to.
Thank you, yes looks like it worked š
