  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a structural engineer in (east) London? Looking to knock through between living and dining room in our Victorian terrace and need calcs/plans for builder and bc.

Had a quote of £850 which struck me as a bit high. But maybe it’s not unreasonable?

A couple of days work (I assume a site visit, travel time, doing some calculations writing the thing up) of the time of a qualified professional with all the associated overheads (like insurance if it goes wrong and your house falls down) and that sounds okay to me.

  • Yeah seems good value, it's mostly not copy paste work

  • Drop Stephen Brooks a line. He is the architect I used for my renovations and be has a building engineer I used that calculated the steel beams for my knock through. It was part of a bigger project so there were economies of scale at play but I suspect you might be able to shave a little bit of money off the quote you have at the moment.

  • not unreasonnable

  • Not unreasonable.

I paid £600 for similar in Norfolk so £850 seems fair enough.

  • Decent price but can give you the details of the guy who’s done our work if useful

  • Think we paid c.£1k for two walls - one with a cranked beam. Just one site visit and then a lot of faff to deal with our incompetent builders.
