  • Nah, owners are already mostly finance companies, and the future is only going to further erode the 20th century notion that somebody travelling by car is the driver and owner of the vehicle.

  • Reporting on petrol panic buying...

I wish I could share your optimism over the demise of the private motor car. Hope you are right.

  • It gets worse

  • The future will be the same they will just be filling the bottles with electricity

  • There will be just as much traffic, and just as much will be single-occupant 4-wheeled vehicles weighing nearly 2 tonnes each, it will just be autonomous and rented on demand. In fact, being chauffeured by a robot makes going by car much more attractive than it is now, so traffic should increase.

  • You probably won’t believe this, but apparently with electricity you have to use one of the old fashioned metal cans. Ironic huh?

Yup. People are so predictably dumb.

  • People are so predictably dumb

No, they're (mostly) predictably rational within the limits of their incomplete knowledge. It's not up to you to dictate what they value, and most car users would still use cars even if they had perfect knowledge of all the costs and benefits. Autonomous vehicles and financialisation from car as burdensome asset to car as service only reduce the costs to the user.

  • most car users would still use cars even if they had perfect knowledge of all the costs and benefits

The people sitting in the two miles of solid traffic on my street know they could make their journey faster and for free on foot. Maybe some of them know this. Some might be aware of the carcinogenic effects of their emissions. All subgroups are equally thick.

  • Humans have never really got to grips with that whole concept of the consequences of their own actions... We always park that stuff until later on when it becomes a real problem...

  • Boring!
    Memes plz.

  • Maybe a Government Minister could tell everyone not to panic about it

  • I'm firmly at the point where if a government representative tells me something isn't going to happen I now plan for it. The incompetence is extreme.

  • I can't help feeling it is more insidious than this though.
I can't beleive that in an industry with such potential political clout, as well as money, that a well-timed leak to force the smaller, [arguably better deal], energy companies out of the market and bring in increased barriers to entry, was an accident.

    Fuck. I've become a conspiracist haven't I.

  • I can't help feeling it is more insidious than this

Nah, it's just business as usual, and corporations are subject to nature just as the beasts of the field; small young ones are more vulnerable to temporary adverse conditions, but the survivors then outlive old ones weakened by age. Politicians deliberately slow the process because they can extract greater rents from incumbents in the form of bribes and sinecures, but their power is barely greater than that of the legendary Cnut from whom they take their name.

  • I can't help feeling it is more insidious than this though

Whenever you find yourself thinking thus kind of thing, remember

    1. Hanlon's Razor
    2. Common interest is more powerful than any conspiracy
    3. For fuck's sake, we have enough conspiracy theories already and there are better things to do with your life than dig your own rabbit holes

    .

  • Common interest is more postman any conspiracy
