Dammit’s adventures in mountain biking

  • I could apply it to myself for the bikes I race on TBH

    But, I enjoy tinkering

    and this.

  • My conclusion from, today, speaking to the designer of the bike and then TF Tuned, Full Factory Suspension and Mojo Rising is that opinion is divided, and it's 3:1 in favour of "coil will be better".

Therefore, I am going to (at a future date to be confirmed) test the bike with:

    1. Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate with 3.5 tokens at 185 psi
    2. Fox DHX with a 500lbs Ohlins linear coil
    3. EXT Storia v3 with either the Ohlins, or the coil that Paul was running (not sure what that is)

And see if I can tell any difference.

  • Isn't chasing some sort of coil suspension & magura braked nirvana more of a hair shirt vibe?

  • 3:1 in favour of "coil will be better"

That's still one designer of bike vs 3 people who'd like to sell you suspension upgrades

  • Isn't chasing some sort of coil suspension & magura braked nirvana more of a hair shirt vibe?

I like it, there's an element of gas-lighting but I think it could work.

  • And see if I can tell any difference.

You should get someone else to change the shocks, and then put some sort of cover over them for the full science approach.
Maybe include option 4: (No shock) as a placebo.

  • or

That's 3 salespeople vs 1 Big Airshock shill

  • I did look at it and thought I could buy a shock whiz for that. But for @dammit the shock whiz won’t work for a coil and it’s @dammit

  • Haha fair enough, indeed it is dammit.

I’m suspect of these telemetry tuning days.
I think it will help set up suspension to run optimally on the track that it’s being tested on. Assuming the rider can smash the same lines consistently over and over.

I suppose what I’m getting at is that the telemetry stuff tends to be used by downhill World Cup racers in order to potentially gain hundredths of a second on the race run.
Average Joe always wants to run what the pros run. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Me and my bikes are a walking/rolling example of it.
But in this instance, tuners offering telemetry set up for £300 is ripping the arse out it as it won’t benefit most riders!

  • Neil, I’ll measure the width of the EXT coils and the cane creek coils. It will give you an idea of any extra clearance they might offer, if any.

I’d guess your pals ext shock has the matching coil.

  • That would be awesome - thanks.

  • Ext 56.5mm
    Cane creek 55mm

That’s a standard cane creek coil though. I don’t have on of the progressive coils.

    25mm width.

Shoot me a PM and I'll pop some in the post.

    But Stravaaaaaa!

  • On the bump stop:

    At 30% sag:

You need to use an Allen key to turn the rebound damper dial:

  • Bear in mind the bump stop will squish down to a few millimetres on a hard bottom out. The piggy back looks like it might be very close to the frame at full compression?

  • But Stravaaaaaa!

Bro, can you believe that I’m 101st out of 1194 people on Strava down my favourite trail?! I’m only 1 minute and 14 seconds behind Reece Wilson and he’s the bloody world champion. I’m effectively a top 10% world class athlete. Strava doesn’t lie.

  • Bear in mind the bump stop will squish down to a few millimetres on a hard bottom out. The piggy back looks like it might be very close to the frame at full compression?

The piggy-back is slightly smaller than the one on the SDU, which comes fairly close but still has clearance.

  • I'm pretty sure that bump stop isn't supposed to move, otherwise I'll just be adding more friction to the system.

  • I hadn’t realised the pace uses a 210x55 shock. If I’d known I could have sent you my DVO coil shock to try before going off the deep end. But it’s all learning innit.

Anyway, lots of photos of a disassembled bike… when will you get it built and go a ride with the dhx on? I need closure.

  • I’m not sure what you mean?

The bump stop is just rubber. It stays at the end of the shaft and deforms when compressed.

  • Steady on. The brakes need refitting and bleeding first...

  • A third set of mt7 brakes need ordered, refitting and bleeding first...
