  • Fantastic, the anodized cranks are really nice on this one!

  • Great job, that GT!

  • Want depending on price.

  • In fact does dibs work from here?

  • If anyone like me remembers this bike, and lusted after those sick rigid fatty forks then now's your chance... I bought a pair myself on a bit of a whim and alas at 186mm the steerer is 4mm too short (but plenty long for most bikes). I'm already running a low stack BMX stem so I can't get away with any less steerer. Anyone here keen at £90 (which is what I paid for them) before I list them properly?

  • Picked up a 531 Zinn centaur last year and decided to build myself a Jo Burt tribute build as seen in the MBUK mags bitd with mint sauce, couldn't afford myself a 753 frame but it would be hard to tell if you didn't know the subtle differences.

Gave it a coat of white and painted on the flowers as close I could to the original.

Found out some old XT and maguras, nos campagnolo rims and finally the white onza porc tyres to finish it off.

    Pic from MBUK 1990

  • pics aren't working for me but I'd love to see the finished article

  • Z4 Bombers at £99 on Chain Reaction just now. Blue in colour. 70mm travel.

  • Just became member in the retro MTB club

Was up for sale in the nearby at a very reasonable price, couldn't resist.

  • Such a solid looking bike. That stx stuff is very nice, and being 94bcd a stridsland ring is always a possibility ;)

  • Newbie question. I recently picked up a 1990 Dawes bike with a 531 frame. Am I over worrying about clearance between the tyre and the chainstay here? I'm struggling to find tyres that fit that have decent grip and are pretty puncture proof. Found some Smart Sam Plus 26x2.1 that only just fit, but wondering if I would be safer with some narrower, and a bit more road oriented Crossroads 26x1.95 tyres. The main purpose of it is messing about in Epping Forest rather than road use. Does that look too close for comfort?

  • I've got 2.1s on my '92 Kona Cinder Cone with about the same clearance, it's been ok through muddy stuff. Yeah I occasionally have to clear mud with a stick but doesn't bother me much. If it's Epping through the winter that's #shitfromabutt territory so maybe the crossroads would be better. Not terribly helpful, sorry.

  • Me neither but I'm glad you did it anyways, fantastic build!

  • Thanks, at the end, became of my miss fav.

  • Couldn’t resist. Now mine.

  • Any cheap and extra small frames going anywhere?
I got a Trek on here for free a short while back but I can't for the life of me get the seatpost or bottom bracket out, and would rather get something in useable condition

  • Was the trek steel?

  • Been offered one of these locally (not this exact bike, but more or less the same). Not sure if it is worth the extra over a Giant Chaos that is also for sale around the corner... any thoughts? Both LX, both canti brakes, but the DB is True Tempter TT Lite and may even be a former team bike (stickers), but the Giant is less than half the price... @vpCogworks @WimVDD what do you think?

  • Yep. Alu post though so heat not really an option and I can't be doing with any caustic action

  • Did you already try and torch the seat tube cluster / bb shell then let it cool? That’s how Winston does it! (Steel frame, alu parts)

  • No haven't used any heat on it yet. Gave it a go in my vice but I could feel the bolts pulling through the MDF worktop so gave up.
The BB is one of those ones where for some reason one side is plastic and it just disintegrates when trying to remove. My BB tool barely bites the splines and I don't have an M8 fine pitch thread to bolt it on

  • ok, this isn't all that retro at 9 years old, but it's kinda in the spirit of the thread... somewhat!

a 26" frame, but plenty of clearance for my 27.5" gravel wheels running 47s

  • @PhilDAS I'm sure I have an old Trek 830 Mt Track although it may also have a stuck seat post and BB. I'll have a check an try and get some pictures. I think it is a 16" frame.
