Other way round. Pitch the outer and floor without the inner for a tarp-esque setup.
-
• #2128
The extra £75 groundsheet is a piss take. Does come with pole holes and clips so you can pitch the outside only, as above. Did quite a few trips without it but was pitching on grass, eventually caved and got it for peace of mind.

Ah, ok. No it should be called a "no fly zone" :)
-
• #2130
Yeah, I reckon if you could get one and then copy the dimensions onto your own piece of material you could probably do a DIY job. I guess it depends if you've got a sewing machine, etc.
I was listening to Overlander podcast and those guys make a lot of their own tarp setups so it sounds tricky initially but like most things gets better with practice. For me though, with no kit and more money than time I'd probably just shell for the £75 groundsheet and then whinge about the cost for months afterwards. :) -

I have the Fly Creek UL 1 and groundsheet, cost is a pain but it all packs so well I don’t mind too much. Fast Fly setup is erm, v well ventilated. I used that to save weight on what turned out to be a v wet weekend and was freezing all night. Still probably weighs less than my bivvy tarp though, so I might use it again with the bivvy in future

This tent will be for the grrl and I to tour with (still thinking GNT or maybe just Scotland), so definitely going for comfort over lightweight. I wouldn't bother packing a tent, only to leave half of it at home :)
I definitely overpacked for Spain though so what would I know?

Fair fucks, well in that case I would still endorse BA kit, we have one of the 4 person ones for car camping and are v happy with it
-
• #2134
Also, we have split that tent between the two of us for short bike-based trips
-
• #2135
If you know or can find a sympathetic builder you could probably get it for free
Oddly enough, was talking to a neighbour who likes a bit of camping and he had been to the building site behind his workplace and liberated a load of what the builders were calling offcuts but was enough for about 3 or 4 groundsheets.

This was my take. Looked into making my own extremely briefly then bought the official version. By the time I come to use it in earnest I'll probably be just about done whinging about it.
Also....the first few times you fire the tent up rapid because all the poles fit in all the holes all nice n easy, its paid for itself.

Hello, any one here using the Decathlon one person backpacking tent?
Seen that some ones used the 2 person version. -

True. Could be important when it's pissing it down in Scotland and you want to get under cover quick as possible.

Which one(s)?
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/browse/c0-sports/c1-camping/c3-backpacking-tents/_/N-149rdpnZ1gkomrs
I'd forgotten about Decathlon stuff. Are any of these worthy of consideration against the Big Agnes options?

The extra £75 groundsheet is a piss take
For the same price I got a bathtub shaped floor insert from Oookworks for the Hilleberg Akto, more suited to wet UK summers when not using the inner tent. The new owner of Oookworks may well make them to suit other tent dimensions, if asked (apparently custom Oooktubs are available) . He also does flat footprints for £60

Going to the End of the Road festival at the weekend and don't fancy lugging my Vango Force Ten across London, on the train, and then through the site. It's a great tent but heavy. It's also a three Peron tent that's really a one & a half person tent.
As I may return to cycle camping next year then the Decathlon one looks about right...

Anyone know if you can buy BigAgnes 12” Shortstik Poleset separately and use with their non-bikepacking tents or are the tents themselves designed differently?
EDIT: They say no, which sucks.

I ended up getting a used BigAgnes Fly Creek 2P off ebay.
It's an older model so I can't find its proper footprint for it anyway. If I want to make my own from Tyvek, is there a specific stuff I need or is all Tyvek the same shit?
I see lots of building material Tyvek on ebay and it looks like some people are selling their own tent-specific footprints made from it but none for the Fly Creek.
EDIT: from dude making them on ebay "For some tents there are heavier or lighter grades of Tyvek available, but owing to the sized of these, only the regular Housewrap at 63 g / sq. metre works."
BigAgnes uses "Nylon Rip-stop 1200mm waterproof polyurethane coating" so what about this stuff: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402451476051

Also, with a groundsheet/footprint - does it need to be pegged down? If it's roughly the size of your tent floor anyway, it's not likely to catch much wind (unless you do what I want to do and extend it into the vestibule area - that might need pegging.
-
• #2145
I only peg it in strong wind.

So a plain groundsheet cut rough to size will work and I could just buy a section of tyvek or maybe this stuff: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402451476051?hash=item5db3fa2e53:g:T4oAAOSw8-VgOAfr
290cm x 132cm
5m x 150cm of this poly stuff costs £25
polycro?

Tyvek and another ultralite one I didn't like. The best ones I have used are a super cheap and heavy blue tarp thing and an actual tent groundsheet with reinforced peg holes (that was from a different shaped tent). You want something that will fold easily and be able to take plenty of wear and tear. Doesn't even really have to be the exact dimensions of the tent, just fold it under. I have also used a groundsheet as a separate place to sit, improvised rear mudguard, windguard etc. Everything depends on the conditions you camp in/on from shit to perfect. The point is to protect your tent floor and maybe give you a clean floor for the porch area, no need to overthink it.
-
• #2148
I reckon I'll just get some tyvek from this guy: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282511928071
Dunno if I'll bother with the loops, just get the sheet. 3m x 1.4m should do for our tent, with a bit of trimming maybe.
-
• #2149
Sure it will be fine. I think it is tyvek that feels like paper, I couldn't get on with it. Cheap enough for you to bin if you can't use it anyway.

Which is noisier tyvek or Neoair sleep pads? :)

What's a fast fly setup? Is that when you don't add the main tent body over the fly net?
