  • what do people do if (i) they don't have off-street parking nor (ii) a charging station on their street? is this a really such a sub-optimal way to run an EV that you wouldn't do it or is it actually quite commonplace and people work around it?

If you get a car with at least 200+ mile range and only need to do max 20 miles per day and can figure out a charger in your rough area... then you're still good to go.

If your daily mileage is high, and you don't have a charger available at either end... you'll want to hold off a while longer until more infrastructure exists.

I've done the granny cable out the window and across the pavement... would not do again.

However I've seen a few set-back houses with external chargers that can only work by running the cable across the path and clearly this is what it's coming to as councils aren't keeping up with infrastructure demand... for example I just spotted this at 20 Grantbridge Street barely 30 minutes ago https://goo.gl/maps/cToQ24J9X8zkAJ717 (bottom right hand side of doorway) but if you know what you're looking for then they're becoming pretty common to see.

  • lmao that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen

nearest charger is 10 mins walk away

  • I think maybe if I did go down this route, I'd just convert my front garden to off-street parking and install a charging point on the front of my house. kinda loathe to look out my front window onto a car tho : /

perhaps by the time I have even learnt to drive, there will be a charging station closer to my home ; )

  • Apparently some places are putting a channel in the ground through which you can run a cable. You sometimes see similar with rain downpipes. Probably works quite well if well installed and maintained. Then you just need to fight for the space outside your house.

That's my situation. (One a bit nearer, but it's rarely free).

I charge when I am out and about (Source London is free parking when charging).

Then once a fortnight or so I park it the 10 min walk away, overnight, to get a full charge. Source caps the overnight to 4 hours, so a full charge costs about £8.50.

I have an over the pavement cable and rubber safety cover thing, but it is there for extremis situations only. Only used once, as a test.

  • The Kona went back to on.to last week - sorry to see it go and feels a bit odd to be carless again even though I’ve no use for a car during school term time

  • All this solar powered, internet of things, energy efficient home stuff is so exciting I am also considering training as a professional electrician and shifting from software development to a more physical profession.

  • Out of interest, what colour was the Kona?

  • Reg started EF21 I think, if you reckon you’ve just taken delivery of it!

  • Ha. It arrives Thursday

  • Taken delivery of ID3 .. so far I’m smitten.
It’s better specced than I’d imagined and quicker .
Long journey Saturday will be a test , so far I’ve learned a shop at Lidl gets me 20 free miles or so and topping up over 90 % seems to take forever and not really worth the wait , and the grey matches my vespa

  • Did they manage to get the stains out then?

  • Cool - how long is your journey on Saturday?

  • that's a handsome car. happy vmmmmmmmm'ing.

  • London wells wells London .. zap map seems to think it might make it of fully charged.
I think I’ll be charging somewhere for sure

  • Yes, even just to get experience of finding and using fast chargers when on a longer journey!

  • So for congestion charging you still need to register the EV and pay a tenner .
Is that all I need to do ?

  • Pretty much. Takes a week or so to come through. I just sent them a screen grab of vehicle reg in lieu of the V5C which the lease company holds proving it's zero emish.

  • Yup. Needs to be paid annually…

  • Anyone have a referral code for on.to? Looking for an alternating to leasing and they seem to fit the bill.

  • Yep. Will pm in a mo

  • Zero baby...

  • Loving the brutalist look of the upcoming Bollinger B1, tho' with a name like that it'll probably be well out of my price range... Ticks all my boxes otherwise, big, black and tough looking...
