  • The night I arrived home, I barely slept. Cramp in my legs and numbness in my hands caused, it seemed, by tension in my shoulders. The next day I stayed in bed much of the time. My legs were stiff and my shoulders ached. I drank plenty of water and used a massage gun on my thighs, calves and shoulders, all of which felt like lumps of rock. I slept better the second night and went for a short walk on Sunday. On Monday I went for a brief and very gentle ride for an hour and a half, keeping my HR and power low (averaging 75 for each). A gentle spin. Slept deeply last night and feel back to normal today.

In other words, recovery has taken a bit longer than usual but then again, the ride was a bit longer than usual. And while walking was not something I wanted to do on Saturday, I felt that I could have gone for a ride had I not been being studious about rest and recovery.

What I have also learnt is that tapering and rest and recovery are my strong suits when I comes to cycling. The rest, not so much.
