  • Interestingly (or not), Chelsea actually made the exact same number of transfers involving ££ as Man City:

    MCFC - 130 transfers w/ 59.2% involving £
    CFC - 95 transfers w/ 80% involving £

CFC need to up their game on free transfers.

  • I don't think it is comparable to members of authoritarian regimes that perpetuate systemic human rights abuses.

  • Isn't it all interlinked? Chinese sponsorship reflects Chinese government plans for projection of superiority.

Pretty sure the government of China is not v right on.

  • Which club is owned by the Chinese government?

  • Lot of dancing on a pin head here this morning.

  • FFP has helped Everton, I reckon. We've had no money to spend on overpriced garbage and have picked up two pretty decent players for very little (comparatively). Amount of money we've wasted over the past 4-5 years is insane.

  • Football is great. The money sources, less so.

  • Where do the glazers get their cash?

Apparently a large part of their wealth came from diversifying an oil and gas company into fisheries and cod liver oil production.

  • Being unable to say that a kleptocrat who finance a regime that murders journalists, for example, is no worse than a US based investment firm owner, for example, is moral cowardice.

  • Which club is owned by the Chinese government?

it used to be 20+ in Europe, fewer now. There has been a policy change in China that has reduced investment in European football.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/chinese-investors-flee-european-football-105538940.html

I understand that the Chinese government has almost fully withdrawn investments from European football in recent years. Some Chinese private sponsors remain though.

Edit: To be clear, no clubs have been owned by the Chinese government but until relatively recently it was Chinese government policy to encourage investment in European football for a variety of reasons.

  • None but there’s Chinese money in Man City, Wolves and West Brom to name three.

If the state wanted to exert some influence on the owners, it wouldn’t be difficult for them to do so.

  • No. I'm saying the inverse.

  • I don't understand what the inverse is. Can you clarify?

  • The Spuds are top of the league, how funny is THAT?!?

  • Fuck, Man City just get harder and harder to support don't they....

  • And Arsenal are bottom! Could be a long wait for St Totteringham day.

  • That investment from the hedge fund world/Chinese gambling (as a projection of government power) is as toxic (but with less visible problems) as sponsorship from a government which chops people's heads off

  • Being unable to say that a kleptocrat who finance a regime that murders journalists, for example, is no worse than a US based investment firm owner, for example, is moral cowardice.

It's well known that football fans have less than two morals per head.

  • I did not know this. And the more I've just read about the 6 year, no break clause contract he negotiated for HK the lack of any other player signing with him makes sense.

  • Good debate, guys, please keep it coming...

Soooooo... How many goals do we think CR7 is gonna score this season? Will he (singlehandedly) destroy Ole's chances of winning the title, lol? Will Captain Harry EVER leave the Spuds? Has Klopp been eating all the pies?

    Who cares, eh?

  • Add Southampton to that list. Gao Jisheng owns 80%, not that he is ever really seen or heard from ( or puts any money in either...)
