This whole thing smacks of ‘we’ve fucked up massively in Kabul and we need a sideshow to distract everyone’ but who really knows these days.

Hmm. Is the current government populated by below-par humanoids with poor judgement who regularly embarrass themselves because that's their sad nature, or are they cunning lizard people who voluntarily embarrass themselves to manipulate our perception (to hide the disasters they create because they're incompetent - um, wait, whut?)

I doubt Earth and Humanity are at the top of the Most Dezireable Planetz to Rule list, so in all likelihood our alien overlords aren’t the slipperiest snakes in the space quadrant.
