The fail there is them not giving a fuck about users. They reused a fair amount of the tech in other areas that were lucrative for them.
I have friends who disappeared into the Googleplex and totally drank the kool-aid. Well, I had friends - for those who become true believers it's a cult and sceptical voices are not welcome.
