@eskay and @Thrasher, thanks for confirming it as an adder. I have only encountered grass snakes during my rural cycle rides in the UK. I did come across vipers on several occasions cycling and walking in Greece, but they seemed to keep to themselves and just slowly slither away.

Sorry yes I believe it was! Nearly ran it over, was curled up on the road basking in the sun but of course made a swift exit when we turned round for a photo. First snake I've seen in the wild, pretty neat!
